Introduction
During her lifetime, Kasturba Gandhi was fondly called as ‘Ba’ by Indians. She was the wife of Mahatma Gandhi. She was a devoted wife, freedom fighter and a social worker. She stood behind her husband during the freedom struggle. She too took active part in the freedom struggle. She proved herself, as the saying goes, ‘Behind every successful man there is a woman.’

Childhood
Kastur was born on April 11th, 1869 at Porbandar. Her father was Gokuladas and mother was Vrajkunwerba Kapadia. He was a businessman and Mayor of Porbandar. The couple had three children – two sons and a daughter. The daughter was named as Kastur. She was an adorable child. In those days, girls were not given any education. Kastur was not sent to school during her childhood. She remained illiterate.
As per the customs of those days, children were married at a very tender age.
