Description

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book.
Sample Book Insights:
#1 I had been to Iowa City once before in June to find a place to live. I was looking for two apartments then, one for myself and one for Lucy Grealy, who I had gone to college with. I got a note from Lucy not long after receiving my acceptance letter from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She said that initially she was sorry because she had wanted to be the only student from Sarah Lawrence there.
#2 I was always picked to give readings in the coffee shop on Parents’ Weekend. People pressed into the little room to listen to her, her voice as small as it was when she directed us to the emergency exits on Friday nights, but more self-confident.
#3 I had graduated from college early and went back home to Nashville. When I got Lucy’s letter, I never considered telling her no, she could find her own place to live. I rented the only practical thing I could find, half of a very ugly green duplex on Governor Street for $375 a month.
#4 When I moved in with Tina, she had just finished mopping the floor three days before in honor of my arrival. The air in the duplex was so hot and humid that the water and Pine Sol had simply puddled and stayed for three days.

I had been to Iowa City once before in June to find a place to live. I was looking for two apartments then, one for myself and one for Lucy Grealy, who I had gone to college with. I got a note from Lucy not long after receiving my acceptance letter from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. I had graduated from college early and went back home to Nashville. When I got Lucy’s letter, I never considered telling her no, she could find her own place to live. I rented the only practical thing I could find, half of a very ugly green duplex on Governor Street for $375 a month.

#4

When I moved in with Tina, she had just finished mopping the floor three days before in honor of my arrival. The air in the duplex was so hot and humid that the water and Pine Sol had simply puddled and stayed for three days.

#5

Lucy had gone to the local auction to buy some furniture, but she ended up buying a futon mattress, a rug, a rickety table with chairs for the kitchen, and a grocery sack full of Harlequin Romance novels from the fifties. She had sex with her driver, B——, twice.

#6

The gawk is a look stronger than a stare. It is full of brazen curiosity, pity, and fear, every unattractive human emotion rolled into one unflattering facial expression. I would stop and stare at those people until they noticed me.

#7

I had no idea what the other student was talking about. I had stopped noticing Lucy’s face years before, seeing her in the cafeteria or walking up the hill to class, always in the center of the most popular students.

#8

Lucy and I had a lot in common, besides being young and having no experience with men. We both had spent our college years dreaming that someone would want to have sex with us. But as Lucy began to realize, wanting sex was not separate from wanting love.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

Iowans were assigned to teach writing and literature classes at the University of Iowa. We had no idea what we were doing, and we were told not to ask about the end of the book before the end had been assigned.

#2

Lucy loved to recite the final lines of King Lear aloud, which she would do all the way home from school. She would spend the entire semester on Lear if she could.
