#1 I am in New Hampshire just over a month later, and it’s raining. Twenty feet across from me, on the other side of a backyard pool, Donald Trump is scolding me. How does he even know my name.
#2 I came back to America because of a boy named Aaron, a severely ill teen who asked to shadow me for a day through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
#3 Trump was so unexpected that the political establishment had not prepared for him. I, on the other hand, had been assigned to cover Trump full-time. I decided to go to New Hampshire and see what happened.
#4 I am tweeting what Trump is saying, and he seems to recognize me. I approach Trump's communications director, Hope Hicks, and ask for a pull-aside. She agrees, and I'm off to the races.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

I am in New Hampshire just over a month later, and it’s raining. Twenty feet across from me, on the other side of a backyard pool, Donald Trump is scolding me. How does he even know my name.

#2

I came back to America because of a boy named Aaron, a severely ill teen who asked to shadow me for a day through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

#3

Trump was so unexpected that the political establishment had not prepared for him. I, on the other hand, had been assigned to cover Trump full-time. I decided to go to New Hampshire and see what happened.

#4

I am tweeting what Trump is saying, and he seems to recognize me. I approach Trump's communications director, Hope Hicks, and ask for a pull-aside. She agrees, and I'm off to the races.

#5

I am afraid to slide back into general assignment reporting and paranoid about the loss of a mission, a purpose, and a gin-clear reason to get up and go to work. I can’t think about any of this now.

#6

Trump was more than an hour late landing in Michigan. The polls looked hopeless, so his team threw a Hail Mary in the hopes that any part of the so-called Democratic blue wall would crumble. Trump promised to win back the White House.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I was supposed to interview Trump that afternoon, but instead I walked into Trump Tower and waited. The crew was two cameramen, a sound guy, the engineer in charge of the news truck, and two producers.

#2

Trump was in a dark suit, the flaps of his unbuttoned jacket waving as he slowly covered the thirty feet of pink marble between the elevators and our location in the Trump Bar. He looked confused when I said I didn’t want a photo.

#3

Trump began yelling at me after I asked him about his campaign manager, who I’d just met. He said I was unprofessional, and that Trump was very upset. His high-pitched voice gave him away. I was baffled by his hostility.

#4

The interview was aired on live TV. I was speaking with my disembodied voice, and Trump was spitting out his answers. He never smiled. He was angry.

#5

I was intimidated by Trump, but I tried to make small talk at the end of the interview to show him that I was not afraid of him. I wanted to know why he thought voters liked him so much, and why he was getting so many fans.
