Description

In this book Ove Korsgaard, the well-known scholar of democracy, examines how the concept of people has changed throughout Danish history. Interpretations and uses of this notion have had dramatic influence on the building of Danish society. The struggle for the people is the struggle for power in society. Until the age of Enlightenment, the concept was used to categorize the subjects of the master of the house, the subjects of the King, the subjects of God. Later the notion became a revolutionary key concept. The people was now regarded as sovereign. Today we are confronted with new questions, but the struggle continues: How are we to understand the concept of people in a world of globalization, individualization and migration? The book is aimed at teachers of Danish history and foreign language students, but anyone who wants a quick overview of Danish history throughout the last 500 years will profit by this book.

The Struggle for the People
Introduction
The Struggle for the Peopleis a short introduction to the modern history of Denmark. The read line is the transformation of the conceptpeoplefrom the time of the Reformation until today – with outlook to other European countries. The notion people is a dynamic concept. It is an idea that can take many shapes. The different shapes have to do with different perceptions of identity. To some extent the outbreak of new feelings of iden tity and new interpretations of the concept people has been the driving forces of changing the Danish society throughout centuries. In old Danish language, the notion people – in Dan ishfolk –was for example not associated with a sovereign ’na tion’, but rather with ’household’ and ’family’. In this sense the concept was always used in relation to a master. However, at a timepeopleacquired a new meaning; it came to mean sove reignty and power, people’s sovereignty and people’s will. The transformation of the concept people: from being determined by its relation to a master to become its own master, changed the Danish society and made it modern. In my work I am influenced by the linguistic turn – the crucial significance bestowed on language in the formation of the self and society. The disciplines of linguistics, narrative theory, and political theories concerning symbolic and imagi nary aspects of politics have been an inspiration. Also Fou cault’s understanding of the individual as not only formed by different ’techniques of discipline’ but also by an array of ’tech niques of the self’ has been applied in my work.

History is not only a matter of ’external’ historical factors, but also a matter of ’internal’ compositions concerning iden tity. The normative foundation of my work is based on the conception that history is a construction of the past. It is a matter of retrieving from the past the most beneficial points of reference wherein today we can glimpse ourselves. The way we construct the past has essential importance to the future. The future is dependent on a creative construction of the past, and is thus connected with a retelling of history that can liberate forces hidden in other more outdated descriptions of reality. This publication is mainly based on my bookKampen om folket. Et dannelsesperspektiv på dansk historie gennem 500 år. Gyl dendal 2004. (The Struggle for the People. Five hundred Years of Danish History Seen through an Educational Perspective). In excess this publication also includes materials from two articles: Ove Korsgaard: “The Danish Way to Establish the Nation in the Hearts of the People“. In John L. Campell, John A. Hall, and Ove Kaj Pedersen (Eds.):National Identity and the Varieties of Capitalism. The Danish Experience. McGillQueen’s University Press. Ove Korsgaard: “Giving the Spirit a National Form: From Rousseau’s advise to Poland to Habermas’ advise to the Euro pean Union“. InEducational Philosophy and Theory. Vol. 38, nr. 2/2006. The publication also includes some materials from my contribution to theDemocracy Canon, published by The Danish Ministry of Education 2008. This publication is a followup on another pamphlet enti tledThe Struggle for Enlightenment. Danish Adult Education during 500 yearsand published 1998 by The Danish Chapter of the Association for World Education. The Danish AWE Chapter has also contributed to this publication. I appreciate and grate fully acknowledge this support.
