Description

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David was originally founded in 1822 as St David’s College, Lampeter. It is now the oldest higher education collegiate institution in Wales, and in its two hundred years of history has been the recipient of many fascinating and rare manuscripts, early printed books, beautifully illustrated volumes, and rare publications from broadsheets to journals. These were largely received through the generous donations of many benefactors, including the institution’s founder Bishop Thomas Burgess of St Davids, with the collection housed today in the Roderic Bowen Library on the Lampeter campus. This fully illustrated volume contains a selection from the many thousands of works spanning more than seven hundred years, with short essays by scholars whose knowledge and appreciation of the works are unrivalled, revealing the riches of what was once known as ‘the greatest little library in Wales’.

Although it is my name which appears on the title page of this book, it is far from being all my own work , which will be immediately apparent to the reader. Without the active and enthusiastic collaboration of my colleagues in the university, Treasures: The Special Collections of University of Wales Trinity St David would never have seen the light of day. Especial thanks are due to my colleagues in the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives; the Special Collections Librarian, Ruth Gooding; and the Special Collections Archivist, Nicky Hammond, both of whom are contributors to this book, for their knowledge of our outstanding collections, and their willingness to deploy that knowledge, so that a fascinating and visually rich selection of our Treasures could be made.
Then there are the contributors from among the past and present members of the academic staff of University of Wales Trinity St David here on the Lampeter Campus: Professor Janet Burton, Dr William Marx, Dr Harriett Webster and Dr Peter Mitchell, all of whom have placed their expertise at my disposal, as did Dr Allan Barton, who succeeded me as Chaplain on the Lampeter Campus, and permitted me to garner fruits of his research here in the library on two of our early printed liturgical books. All submitted to the strict time limit that I imposed for their contributions, and, to my joy and relief, fulfilled their promises with only the very gentlest of promptings. Research may sometimes be a lonely activity but it is rarely insular; the help of others is required more often than not, and here I would acknowledge that of Dr Philip Gooding for locating and scanning material more easily available in Montr al than in the United Kingdom.
In many ways a book such as this stands or falls not only on the authority and accessibility of its text, but also on its design and illustration. Here I have been extremely fortunate in being able to work with the outstanding photographer, designer and artist Dr Martin Crampin, a friend and collaborator for more than twenty years. A scholar and art historian in his own right, his knowledge and understanding of what was needed to bring text and illustration together have been of enormous benefit.
The decision was made at the very beginning that this book, based as it is on the collections of a university library set in the heart of Wales, should be published both in Welsh and English. This would not have been possible without the collaboration and support of Professor Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones, Director of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies at Aberystwyth (where I was formerly, for three enriching and happy years, a Research Fellow) and the skill and dedication of the translators: Catrin Beard, Gwenll an Dafydd, George Jones, Osian Rhys and Lowri Schiavone.
Bringing all this work together in its final form has been the task of the University of Wales Press, and here I have been fortunate to work with a patient and enthusiastic team including, Sarah Lewis, Head of Commissioning; Steven Goundrey, Production Manager; and Natalie Williams, Director of the Press. Copy-editing was by Marian Beech Hughes and Mike Gooding. Ruth Gooding compiled the index.
One advantage of having an association with an institution that stretches back over many years is the opportunity of working with, and learning from, colleagues whose fields of study and expertise greatly enrich one s own. The first port of call for anyone delving into the 200-year history of St David s College is the two-volume History by Canon Dr William Price. It has been my good fortune to have known William for over fifty years, succeeding him here as University Archivist, and he will recognize from the pages of this book how much as editor I have relied upon his research. Of those whose work has been with our Special Collections, I acknowledge, with gratitude the contributions to my knowledge and understanding of them, the late Robin Rider, the Revd Dr David Selwyn (who also supervised my doctoral research), Peter Hopkins and Sarah Roberts.
A project such as this also relies upon the support of many others who make up the college , and here I would especially acknowledge the help and support of the Executive Head of Library and Learning Resources, Alison Harding, herself a contributor to this volume; Sarah Goodwin, of the University s Audio-Visual Media Service; and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Medwin Hughes; and his Chief of Staff, Shone Hughes. Finally, on a personal level, my thanks and gratitude are due to my wife Valerie - herself a graduate twice over of this venerable institution - for patiently encouraging - and putting up with - a husband whose mind and energies were so often directed into the past.
It is my hope that this volume amply fulfils the intention to bring before the readership some understanding of the rich holdings of the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives within University of Wales Trinity St David at Lampeter, and by so doing make a small contribution to the commemoration of its 200-year history.
