#1

The first and foremost scripture of Yoga is the Yoga Sūtras, which were written by the sage Patañjali. Within these two hundred short sūtras, the entire science of Yoga is clearly delineated.

#2

The goal of yoga is to control the rising of the mind into ripples. When the mind is controlled, you experience yoga. The Yogic experience is gained by controlling the modifications of the mind.

#3

If you can control your thought forms, you are not bound by the outside world. You can make the world a heaven or a hell, depending on your attitude. Then there is nothing in this world to bind you.

#4

The Seer, or true you, is reflected in the mind which is your mirror. Normally, you can't see the true Self because your mind is colored. To see the true reflection, see that the water is clean and calm and without any ripples.

#5

The Yogic life is about self-reformation, self-control, and self-adjustment. When we can accomplish these three things, we will see a new world, a harmonious and happy one.

#6

There are two types of vrttis, those that bring us pain and those that do not. The first type is based on selfishness, and the second type is based on selflessness. We must try to cultivate selfless thoughts.

#7

We use the trick of developing certain positive thoughts while removing negative ones. We tell the mind that we want to create some thought forms, but if they bring us pain, we will suffer. We are not interested in killing ourselves.

#8

Valid knowledge is knowledge gained through perception, inference, or authority. You may not have seen anything personally, but you may have heard something from a reliable source. The same is true for the Self.

#9

By analyzing our thoughts and eliminating one set after another, we can’t just throw everything into one garbage pail. We must sort them so that it is easier to eliminate them later on.

#10

In viparyaya, at least there is a rope to be mistaken for a snake. But in vikalpa, there is nothing there. You still create an opinion about it. If you thought about it, you would say, If he gave all four wheels to be repaired, he couldn’t drive it back.

#11

The fourth type of sleep is the dreamless sleep. Normally, we say we do not have any thought in the mind during sleep. But actually we have the thought of having no thought. That is why when we wake up, we say, I slept very well; I knew nothing.

#12

The five types of vrittis are memories, dreams, daydreams, impressions, and thoughts. To make the mind void, you must control these vrittis.

#13

The first qualification for the practice is that it should be done for a long time. It should be continuous, and with full attention and faith in your achievement. The last qualification is that you should do it in all earnestness.

#14

If you are that patient, your mind is more settled, and what you do will be more perfect. If you are unsettled and anxious to get the result, you are already disturbed, and nothing done with that disturbed mind will have quality.

#15

Non-attachment should not be confused with indifference. Non-attachment literally means colorless. It means not being attracted to or obsessed with anything. It is achieved through the practice of vairāgya, or non- greed.

#16

The secret of life is to be desireless. You cannot be eternally happy by possessing things. The more you possess, the more sad you become. By renouncing worldly things, you possess the most important sacred property: your peace.
