Description

Eruch Jessawalla, one of Baba’s intimate mandali, would tell Harry stories about Baba in the early days and they would discuss various spiritual topics that Harry would record on his tape recorder. During Harry’s lifetime he would use the material from these conversations to give his public talks on Meher Baba. Meher Baba encouraged Harry to begin speaking about Him to the Baba group in New York City, called the Monday Night Group and later at the Society for Avatar Meher Baba’s office on Saturday nights. Then in 1967, Baba gave Harry an order to give two public programs to celebrate Baba’s birthday and silence day each year. At these events Harry would give a talk.
Eruch actually requested Harry in 1970, in Meherazad, to publish his experiences, because Eruch felt Harry had a deep understanding of Baba’s life and work because of his intimacy with the God-Man, both as His doctor and mandali. Meher Baba on different occasions called Harry Kenmore one of His most intimate mandali, His apostle, His dear son and a chip off the Ole Block.
The themes and concepts in each talk were all developed through Harry’s understanding and elaboration that reflected the conversations he had with Baba and the mandali, his intense study of Baba’s principles and precepts in the books he read, spiritual themes discussed by Baba and stories told in mandali hall.

Acknowledgements
We wish to acknowledge those who have shared their time and effort to help us in compiling this book of Dr. Harry Kenmore’s talks from his library of audio recordings and transcripts of the talks. We thank John Florence for his expertise in repairing our old reel-to-reel tape recorders which without his help we could not have been able to listen and transcribe Harry’s talks. Also, thanks to Steve Sakellarios for transferring audio tapes to CD’s for us to listen to each talk without disturbing the original tape. Most of the pictures in this book were scanned by Bob Ochtrup from black and white negatives and 35mm color slides. It was a big help to have some of the transcripts of Harry’s talks partially edited by members of the Society for Avatar Meher Baba, all the way back to the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.
We also thank Philip Creager, Laura Smith and Sheila Gambill for content and editing advice. We also thank David Fenster for giving us permission to use one picture of Meher Baba from Meher Nazar Publications.
Introduction
Harry was a unique soul. He was born on February 10, 1910 into a Jewish family in New York City. He was a good student, a leader among his peers and was well liked by his friends. His sense of humor in his early life was an attribute Meher Baba and the mandali enjoyed on his many visits to Meherazad in the 1950’s through 1970. With his extraordinary memory, he was able to rely on this trait, and accomplished what many thought was unachievable. Living in the early 1900’s, with three siblings, his parents were unprepared to deal with Harry when he went blind at the age of sixteen. Harry could not rely on their support, and although they were aware of his upcoming blindness, due to retinitis pigmentosa, they did not prepare him for this devastating disability. He did manage to acquire some skills at the Lighthouse for the Blind to function as a blind person.
He left home, still in his late teens, where he joined a circus and later acted in vaudeville. He developed a sense of independence with the assistance of the people he met on his travels. But soon, he had the urge to return to New York. Not much is known about this time, as he didn’t share much of his personal life, in his later years. What we do know is that he graduated from high school taking evening classes, with the help of many friends and again the Lighthouse for the Blind. He thought of his future career and reached out for guidance. He liked working with his hands and found the idea of becoming a chiropractor suited him. He graduated from the New York School of Chiropractic on June 7, 1941 and worked in a clinic. In 1946 he was married, and soon started a family. His daughter was born in June, 1947. Unfortunately, he and his wife divorced in 1952. Dr. Kenmore saw his daughter on a regular basis over the years. And his ex-wife still helped him with many aspects of his life.
Harry first heard of Meher Baba in 1954, just weeks after the “three incredible weeks” sahavas that Baba held in Meherabad, India, with His western and eastern male disciples. He attended Baba meetings and read all he could about Him. He longed to meet Baba – who he accepted as the God-Man of our age. His wish came true in 1956, at the Delmonico Hotel in New York City and also at the Meher Spiritual Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
In 1957, he wrote a letter to Meher Baba, asking Him if he could come to India to offer his chiropractic services, to help alleviate Baba’s suffering. Baba had sustained a serious pelvic fracture in the December 2, 1956 automobile accident in Satara, India. As it turned out, Harry had recently completed a ten-year research project, where he developed a technique to adjust and manipulate the spine and pelvic area for the very injuries that Baba had sustained.
Baba allowed Harry to come to Meherazad to treat His injuries and this began a deep loving relationship between the God-Man and His disciple. Harry came as a doctor and became, over a thirteen-year span of regular visits to India, not just His doctor, but His entertainer, friend and intimate mandali.
The following is a quote, told by Eruch Jessawala to a group of eastern devotees in July, 1969, from the book, HARRY – The Story of Dr. Harry L. Kenmore and His Life with His Beloved Pop, Meher Baba, which illustrates the relationship between Harry and Baba.
“Harry was the one who was very close to Baba. Baba used to call him His very dear son, and he would address Baba as his Pop, my Pop. Where’s my Pop? He would address Him in letters and all that, God and Pop. His friend, His companion, everything He was in this world. His world and activities just revolved around Baba after he met Him in America for the first time.”
From the late 1950’s through the 1960’s, Dr. Kenmore would travel to India many times, sometimes staying for one to two months in Meherazad with Baba and the mandali. He also became very close with Meherjee, Francis, Mani and especially with Eruch, who called Harry his “bench-mate”. Eruch and Harry would sit for hours discussing various topics on the green bench outside of Mani’s office, in Meherazad or on a bench in the Bund Garden, in Poona, if Baba was in residence at Guruprasad. Many of these conversations were recorded. Eruch and all the mandali were aware that their conversations were being recorded.
Eruch would tell Harry stories about Baba in the early days and they would discuss various spiritual topics that Harry would record on his tape recorder. During Harry’s lifetime he would use the material from these conversations to give his public talks on Meher Baba. Meher Baba encouraged Harry to speak about Him to the Baba group in New York City, called the Monday Night Group and later at the Society for Avatar Meher Baba’s office on Saturday nights. Then in 1967, Baba gave Harry an order to give public programs to celebrate Baba’s birthday and silence day each year. At these events Harry would give a talk. Singers and skits were also included in the program. And he would send copies of the various talks on audio tapes to India for Baba and the mandali to review. In one of Harry’s letters to Eruch he thanks his “bench-mate” for helping to “feed the babies”! Baba referred to Harry’s tape recorders as the “babies”. Baba would request that Harry record their conversations.
Eruch told Harry, on his last visit to Meherazad, in 1970, that he needed to share his experiences with Baba. He said Harry had a unique way of using language to interpret Baba’s messages. This was also told to Harry, in 1962, by a well-known astrologer, Sir Hugh McCraig. He told Harry that he had the ability to combine his talent of creative writing with his ability to use psychology to present Eastern philosophy in a new way for the Western world.
Eruch actually requested Harry in 1970 in Meherazad, to publish his experiences, because Eruch felt Harry had a deep understanding of Baba’s life and work because of his intimacy with the God-Man, both as His doctor and mandali. Meher Baba on different occasions called Harry Kenmore one of His most intimate mandali, His apostle, His dear son and a chip off the Ole Block. This relationship with his “bench-mate” would even continue after Baba dropped His body. Eruch would look forward to Harry’s visits, and was greatly s
