Description

Dr. Christopher Toote has written a master-preacher guide for pastors and teachers to learn how to outline a sermon, access a biblical text, understand multiple ways to interpret the Bible, and provide applicable meaning in today's world. Dr. Toote understands how to prepare, present, and apply God's word. He brings a scholar's mind and a pastor's heart to his writing. This work is drawn from a deep well of experience in Christian and secular higher education and a lifelong practice of biblical exposition. He's been on both sides of the pulpit- as preacher and parishioner. He has lived out the gospel on campus and preached and taught faithfully in congregations.

This book reflects years of hard work from a student of God's word. He understands what it's like to work throughout the week and be responsible for the work of the word on a weekly basis. When I read preaching textbooks, I would rather read from those who prepare a new sermon regularly rather than a preacher who only speaks occasionally. Dr. Toote knows the weekly process of prayer, reflection, study, and delivery. He knows the experience of struggling through a Saturday night after a busy week with little time to prepare a message. He understands the demands of a congregation, and he has walked with people through life and death. These sermon outlines reflect his pastoral experience.

In this three volume collection, he offers the student of God's word 150 teachable, ready-to-use outlines for teaching on relationships, personal discipleship, and trust in Jesus as Lord. He mines treasures from 36 books of the Bible and over 113 key passages and scripture readings from both the Old and New Testaments. Dr. Toote explains favorite passages clearly and pushes the reader to study unfamiliar passages carefully. His applications are personal, practical, and profound.

Each volume covers a broad sweep of scripture and yet has distinctive themes that emerge. Volume one teaches us how to use the Bible to deepen and develop our relationship with the church, our families and our parents. The second volume deals with discipleship: how to grow personally in our walks with the Lord. The third volume focuses on Lordship: how to trust Jesus in all spheres of life.

FOREWORD

The call to preach is the call to preparation: spiritual preparation, mental preparation, emotional preparation, physical preparation and sermon preparation. Sermon preparation is what this book of sermon outlines is all about. Granted, volumes could be written about the other areas of preparation that the preacher must engage in, and how each one carries its own level of importance as a contributing factor to effective preaching. In many cases the best things the preacher can offer God at the preaching moment are a rested body and a clear mind with the understanding that they are tools in the hand of God for the proclamation of His transforming Word.
Sermon preparation cannot occur effectively without divine revelation and inspiration. This encompasses revelation about the context, culture, community, and congregation - including their challenges, needs, conditions, and problems. This revelation answers the question, “Why preach?” Preaching applies the Word of God to human conditions with the imbedded power of transformation. When the answer to the question, “Why preach?” is clear in the mind of the preacher it gives birth to another question, “What should be preached?” In light of the divinely revealed human need, “What must be preached?” The answer to this question comes through divine inspiration. God breathes into the spirit of the preacher a word, a phrase, a sentence, or some other part of a Biblical text and gives it the life it needs for the prevailing context. God, in His process of revealing and inspiring the “why” and “what” to preach, may use the preacher’s market place observation, or some casual conversation, or some formal deliberation on a serious life issue. More times than not the preacher must ask, seek and knock persistently to receive the revelation and inspiration required for quality sermon preparation.
Dr. Toote, in this book of sermon outlines, shares with the reader some of the results of the divine revelation and inspiration he has received that led to the development of these sermon outlines. Please know that the outlines in this book are not full sermons, they are sermon starters. However, each outline is the result of quality textual interrogation and interpretation for exegetical analysis. These are the basic building blocks in laying the foundation of a sermon. The outline gives the sermon its walls, roof, rooms, and windows but it is not fit for habitation until the preacher/teacher using the outline installs the flooring, furniture, fixtures, and other amenities that make it fit for the habitation of thought, consideration, contemplation, or even imagination.
Dr. Toote, with the excellence of a master craftsman, employs rhetorical and homiletical devices in each outline that contribute to what Eugene Lowery would call, “its beat” or “rhythm” that makes it easy to follow. When listening closely you will hear at least three of Michael Quicke’s five voices of the sermon: the voice of Scripture, the voice of culture, and the voice of worship. The other two voices will be added by the preacher/teacher who uses the outline, those voices are the voice of the preacher/teacher, and the voice of the congregation.
As you engage with these outlines your heart will be exposed to the revelation and inspiration required for quality sermon preparation. It is my prayer that you will be as prepared to preach, as the sermon you prepare, is prepared to be preached. Preach the Word!

PREFACE

This 3-Volume “ Powerful Sermon Outline ” Series is comprised of 50 sermon outlines in each volume. This is the third volume of the series. I would encourage you to add the three volumes to your library because each of them gives a different look to developing sermon outlines.
During my studies in seminary, as a direct result of three classes - Exposition, Hermeneutics, and Homiletics, I have diligently prepared sermon outlines for all sermons delivered. This has been a commitment. This has been an uncompromising resolve. These sermonic outlines have been the framework of a few of the sermons I have preached and chronicled over the years. I pray that pastors, ministers, evangelists, teachers, or laypersons receive a blessing in referencing them as a guide or motivation to develop their own.
Also, I want to encourage preachers to prayerfully provide coherent and thematic messages.   There should be a rhythm of divine preparation for all Biblical preaching. Consecration, prayer, study, research, context, exegesis, bridging the “ then ” and “ now ” , and application are all measures to the homiletical beat. Preaching requires work by a “ workman ” . (2 Timothy 2:15). A workman must possess and utilize tools effectively, skillfully, and accurately for optimum results. Warren Wiersbe, in his book, “ Walking With The Giants, ” notated that the real secret of G. Campbell Morgan ’ s ministry (apart from his spiritual devotion) is found in one word – work . George Campbell Morgan – pastor, evangelist, and Bible teacher extraordinaire, was known throughout England as the “ prince of expositors. ” When asked the secret of his success as an interpreter and expositor of the Word, he would say, “ Work – hard work- and again, work! ”
Dr. Alexander White, Theological Scholar and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland during the 19 th century, said, “ A congregation is awaiting you to be made by you, after you have been made by God. ” All messages should convict the preacher before he or she delivers God ’ s message as God ’ s messenger. God owns the message. It is His message. We are the messengers - carrying His message. The message needs to be delivered as God ’ s message, not the messenger ’ s. Hence in this holy and divine exchange, God must get the glory, not us. He must be the spotlight, not us. Christ must be lifted up, not us.
It is my sincere prayer that God uses you mightily in your sermon preparation, your sermonic living, and your sermon delivery for only His glory. Soli Deo gloria . Amen.
