Description

This is a book about a single mom with 3 children placing her faith and trust in God to carry her through all her trials and tribulations. Her heart goes out to all single moms in hopes that with her testimony she can help them succeed as well.

From the time she was a little girl, author Della J. Korabek experienced many trials and tribulations. But for each hurdle she encountered, she knew she could survive and thrive because God stood beside her throughout the journey.

In A Single Mom’s Story, Korabek narrates her life story beginning with her birth in a small town in New York in 1935, continuing through her formative years, sharing details about her family, her schooling, and more. It reveals how, at forty years old, she found herself a single mother of three children. However, she realized that with God, all things are possible.

Korabek offers her personal testimony to touch the hearts of other single moms, seeking to give them hope and let them know they are not alone. She communicates the message that with God’s help, they, too, can live a successful life raising their children as single mothers.

Afterword

To everything there is a season, and a time for every matter or purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die: a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted. A time to kill, and a time to heal: a time to break down, and a time to build up: A time to weep, and a time to laugh: a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1–8
Acknowledgments
Thank you to all who contributed to the publishing of this book. We lost our dear mother, Della, on December 17, 2021. She was in her seventies and eighties when she wrote this book. It was her passion to have it published, as she wanted to let all mothers know that raising children can be tough, but with God, all things are possible.
My Advice for Moms
My advice for single moms—for all moms, really—is to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and become born again (John 3:1–15). God will be with you through all your trials and tribulations. He will always be there for you, and he will do things for you that no one else can do. Your life will have its ups and downs, but just knowing that God is with you will make your life wonderful and enjoyable. Always remember that God loves you and your children and that God is always there for you.
For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He (even) gave up his only-begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish—come to destruction, be lost—but have eternal (everlasting) life.
John 3:16
Chapter 1 The Start of a Family
This is a story of a girl who was born in a small town in the state of New York. Throughout her life, she went through many trials and tribulations and trusted and counted on God to get her though all of them. She always believed that with God, all things were possible, and they were (2 Corinthians 12:10).
So here is the beginning of Delilah’s life: Her parents, Stan and Adele, met at a dance. Stan played both a saxophone and a violin in the band. He and Adele went out together for a while, and then they got married. They settled in the small town of Armor, New York. A year later, they had a baby girl and named her Delilah. Two years later, they had a baby boy and named him Robbie. Two years after that, they had a third child, a baby boy, and named him Jimmy. They had a lovely family.
Their little girl, Delilah, could play the piano at the age of five years. She played a few popular songs every day. She loved the piano, and she played by ear, like her dad and his brothers and sisters. She enjoyed playing the piano whenever she could.
One day, her mother made lunch for her children—peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which they loved. Delilah took her sandwich, sneaked out the front door, walked to the corner gas station, and sat on the cement circle, where a big truck filled the gas pumps. It wasn’t filling up that day, so she sat there to eat her sandwich. A lady, however, got some gas for her car, and as she was leaving, she backed up right over Delilah.
Delilah started screaming and crying. The lady, who happened to be a neighbor, pulled forward, jumped out of the car, picked up Delilah, and carried her home to her mother. Both the child and the lady were crying when Delilah’s mother answered the door. The lady was very upset.
Delilah’s mom and dad got Stan’s sister to watch the boys so they could take Delilah to the hospital. When the doctor tried to x-ray her, she was scared and fought to get off the x-ray table. The doctor said, “Well, I guess she’s not hurt too bad. No broken bones. She sure is bouncing around a lot.”
Her parents thanked the doctor and took Delilah home. Her mother scolded her for walking to the corner gas station, especially by herself. But all in all, God was with her (Ephesians 6:1–3). Her parents believed that God had his hand on their child. She could have been injured severely or killed, but she seemed to be OK, with no broken bones, bruises, or head injuries. She was back to playing the piano and playing with her brothers, just as normal. They knew God had watched over their little girl (Psalm 3:3).
Chapter 2 Schooltime for the Children
When Delilah turned six years old, her mother enrolled her in the first grade at school. She liked going to school and having friends to play with. It was a great year for her. Her brothers were home, cared for by their mother. Robbie was four years old, and Jimmy was two years old.
Time seemed to fly by. It was a busy year. Dad was going to work every day, and Mom was home, taking care of the family chores and tending to the boys while Delilah was in school. She did well in school, passing tests and making it to the second grade. She became seven years old in January. She liked going to school and being with all her friends.
One day, the teacher called her mom and advised her that Delilah was having trouble seeing and reading. Her mom and the boys walked to the school to pick up Delilah and took her home. Her mom told the teacher that she would take Delilah to the optometrist to have her eyes examined.
When Delilah’s dad came home from work, her mom told him that Delilah was having trouble seeing and reading in school. They took her to an optometrist, who said he couldn’t find anything wrong with Delilah’s right eye, but she was blind in her left eye. They had glasses made for her so she could go to school and do her schoolwork.
As time went on, her mom was not pleased with the results, so she prayed (Psalm 5:1–3). Her mom decided to take Delilah to a specialist to see if he could find out what was wrong with her left eye. After the exam, the specialist said he couldn’t determine what was wrong with her left eye.
Despite it all, she did fairly well in school. Thank God.
When Delilah was around nine years old, her mother took her to another specialist. After the exam, that doctor put a patch over her right eye to see if it could bring sight back to the left eye, but it was only in the right corner of the eye. She wore the patch on and off for a year or two. She thought that alone was a miracle. With God, all things are possible. At least she had one good eye. She adjusted to it and did well in school. One bad eye and one good eye was no big deal. She wore glasses for the rest of her days, and that was just fine. She got used to glasses and liked them.
Delilah walked to school with her two brothers every day. Her parents told her to watch over them when walking to school because they were only seven and five years old.
Chapter 3 The Big Move to the Farm
When the children were eleven, nine, and seven years old, Stan and Adele looked into buying a sixty-acre farm with a two-story house, located about twenty-five miles outside Buffalo, New York. It took some time, but they did it. Everyone was eager to move into the
