Description

Question for You. Do you have an addiction to dieting and an addiction to food? Pam and her husband had these strongholds for long decades, despite their love for their faith and success in other life areas. In her book, Bariatric Surgery or, the Old Fashioned Way?, she shares with you her ultimate surrender in this area. She also includes chapters using experts in the field of metabolism and personal training. There is an Appendix of experts and websites that is helpful. Bariatric surgery, for the morbidly obese, gives a wonderful and lengthy time out to regain mental stability and make physical changes. Far more patients, (than in early surgery days), take advantage of this time out but too many still do not. The surgery alone does not create lifetime maintenance. The surgery does give a lifetime edge along with new habits. Pam is in a small category of Bariatric patients from the 1990s who have maintained their weight loss. From 1995 she has watched historical changes in improvements and more realistic promotions of the surgery. The weight maintenance numbers have grown as clinics now teach that the surgery is only a tool. In her book Pam gives credit for this dramatic change to the wonderful blogging sites available to patients, authored by patients themselves. In nineteen years as a Personal Trainer Pam promoted moderation in a personal exercise regime not throwing up, passing out or crying! Pam says, We would all rather play than work; one is an obligation, the other is pure joy.Bariatric Surgery or, the Old Fashioned Way? shows readers how to recapture the joy of eating, moving and living without guilt, pain or fear. God does not condemn us, but rather uses conviction, and He never gives up on us! Be encouraged in this book that God is For You!

Short-term Verses Lifelong Success
In regard to the obesity surgeries, if a patient’s surgery turns out to accomplish “physician assisted starvation” for a considerable time post-op, he may not immediately recognize the need to re-program his mind with regard to food, exercise, and lifestyle habits. This short-term success is, therefore, usually just that: short term! As post-op years increase, he will certainly notice the gradual increase in weight gain as he is able to have more food and has not yet adopted an exercise program. Unfortunately, when he arrives at this point he won’t have the safety net of having done a lot of mental work and internal changes in attitude and habits, because until that moment arrived he did not have to, and he probably thought he would never have to. Simply said, the surgery worked too well for too long. Adopt Pam’s thoughts and educational points to prevent re-gain! As Pam says, “the surgeon operated on your stomach, not on your brain!”

“This was one of the most encouraging books I have ever read! Pamela really set the bar for explaining how to stay healthy and not regain after bariatric surgery. I am so thankful to read about the experiences of a fellow Christian who followed Gods path for her life! The book is full of practical, original, and realistic ways to keep weight off after bariatric surgery. Thanks Pamela!” Marianne Barnes… Gourd Artist, Author, and Basket maker at Baskets and Gourds by Mari

Pam Harrelson is neither a Bariatric nutrition expert nor a clinical nutrition expert. She simply shares her own “tweaks” in good nutrition that have delivered her from food addiction, based on her own personality. She refers you to websites in her appendix who are professional experts! This is not a diet book!

DEDICATED TO MY HUSBAND OF 30 YEARS!
Robert Al Harrelson
July 15, 1947– July 9, 2000
Two Bariatric Surgeries

This is an e-mail that Al wrote to a friend before he died. She sent it to me in the regular mail just two days after his funeral. We had never met her. They were each involved in Harrelson genealogy research online. You will be able to see from his letter to Dee that he wanted our book written. It delighted me and surprised me when I read his thoughts to a stranger. He also called me his “lovely wife!” In it he confirms our suffering over the years. Al’s words in this e-mail reminded me of many conversations that he and I had about believing in me to write this book in order to help others in bondage to this terrible addiction. Al died three years after his gastric by-pass surgery.

From: AL H To: Dee

Date: Monday, March 13, 2000 Subject: Prospect Concern

Hi Dee,

“As for me, as you can read in my link, I am waiting on a heart transplant. By the grace of God I have been able to stay at home most of the time. Since I can rest and take my medication I have been able to have a quality life style. As for my possible surgery, recent tests in the last 2 weeks indicate I need another angiogram tomorrow - to determine if I need bypass surgery. My cardiologist believes it will be necessary, however, we shall see tomorrow. My diagnosis has been dilated cardiomyopathy with an ejection fraction as low as 114k.

Am I concerned with the prospect of surgery? For years I had the Type A lifestyle. The first time I was diagnosed with DCM in 1986, I took my office to the hospital with me. In 1996 I had another major episode with DCM. My cardiologist told me I needed to retire from work. You know how we Type A’s are (in one category), we go through a stage of denial. I loved my job more than I loved my family and God. In 1997, God put me flat on my back again. I realized then I could not keep up with the job. My decision after much prayer was to have a closer relationship with God and not worry about the future. Since retiring I do not worry about things. My family knows where I stand.

Almost everything is done in my life, except knowing the last thing I am expected to do. My children know that if I am called to leave this earth they have a father that loves them with all my heart, despite how sick it is. They know that I now set the example God wanted me to leave them with.

The same for my lovely wife, Pam. She raised our children and now she has finally started her career as a Personal Trainer where she can help others. She hopes one day to write a book about our experiences with obesity, bariatric surgery, and what needs to be done to change a person’s life style before it has been ruined as mine was. Hopefully she will be able to do this using my life’s example and her life’s example. She has changed her presentation title from “The Dieting Mentality” to “Where’s the Truth?”
Thanks for all your effort on the NCBLAOEN list.
I plan on emailing you again soon!”

He said almost everything in his life is done, except knowing the last thing he is supposed to do. The moment I read the letter, standing by my mailbox, I knew that it was a message from his grave. What was the last thing he was supposed to do? Could it be inspiring me through this surprise email, delivered to me through a stranger?
