Description

“Life is guaranteed NOT to be easy. We are promised we will have various trials. Real life stories of hope, and encouragement that God will see you through. Come What May.”

Nancy’s stories were born from her prayer journals, often her cry for help and healing knowing Scripture was her only anchor. A pure honest collection full of hope. Nancy’s encouraging words and scripture references will leap from these pages and into your heart. Life is uncertain, and it is guaranteed too NOT be easy. Determined to never give up, Nancy shares what it means to be kept in the Love of Jesus and sustained by His Word.

Precious memories line these pages expressing a fierce, unstoppable love and the impact each person contributed to Nancy’s life and to the Work Jesus had begun in her. Nancy’s Aunt Donna and Uncle CA Wilson who love to hear her stories made her promise to share them with others. It was her Aunt Donna that said, “Oh Nancy. Sweetie, your stories help me and your uncle, and they will help others too. You must have them published and be an encouragement to others. We all need an Aunt Donna to take us out of our comfort zone and to trust the Lord. We thank Aunt Donna that we can open these pages and see how the loving. kindness of Jesus spills out as Nancy shares from her heart. Oh, the Peace He gives as we choose to trust and obey Him, “Come What May”, all honor and glory belong to Him.

DOUBLE MINT GUM AND SALVATION

D ouble your pleasure, double your fun with Double mint, Double mint, chewing gum! Add the Double mint twins and you’ve got a hit; of course, they were beautiful twins that sang and were simply delightful. Not one person telling you but two a confirmation indeed. I think things on television were still pretty much only in black and white when the first twins appeared, but there was still radiance and charm spilling over and with the catchy tune and perfect pitch you were captivated and right there with them. The message is short and sweet but one that has been remembered for years and years, I am sure, this jingle will be remembered by many who may be reading this.
Advertising has learned a pretty face and a few clever words, and you have our attention. Appeal to the flesh and emotions and 9 times out of 10 you would have taker, indeed. It worked in the garden with Adam and Eve, they could have all but one thing and that was the very thing they had to have. The one thing that their eyes and heart got fixed on and then add the clever serpent bending Eve’s ear. He just had to get her attention onto what she did not have and what she was missing out on, forget about all she had been given and get the flesh to engage, promise her something she does not have and watch her fall.
The advertiser’s job is to sell you that gum. Make you want it and feel like you must have it and if you choose Double mint, you get a Bonus because you can double your pleasure and double your fun, just so easy choose this gum. And let the fun begin Um Um good what instant satisfaction. However, what they fail to tell you is that incredible flavor that that your mouth longs for does not last much more than an instant, in about 3 minutes or less the flavor is gone. That’s right, all the fuss for something that satisfies about 3 to 5 minutes. Yes, my friend this is oh so true.
One June summer morning in 1964, I was nine and a half (those halves are important at age 9) years old, I was getting ready to leave for VBS, Vacation Bible School, at Macedonia Baptist Church. I had been going there with my best friend Debbie Henderson and many of the other kids I went to school with. I do not remember the reason I had to go into my dad and mom’s bedroom that morning before I left, but there I was and there on the corner of their dresser was a partial package of double mint gum, in that bright green wrapping which seemed to be calling my name. Now, I knew the gum was there because I had asked my momma the day before for a piece and she kindly said, No Nancy, not today, (now I have an older sister Dorine by 5 years and a older brother Mike by 17 months)Momma said, I am saving it for you kids when I can give you each one, so do not worry, you will get your piece of gum. I started to walk away and then I heard that song. Double your pleasure, double your fun with Double mint, Double mint, chewing gum!
Now me and the gum did not really have a conversation, but it is interesting to me that almost 60 years later I can clearly see that young skinny little girl in that room face to face with her longing for this gum. What in the world is happening, what was the strong desire or attraction? It was not like I was deprived of small pleasures and great tasting things. I am here to tell you my momma was a cook and a baker indeed and it would be a rare day for anyone to come to our home and not find something sweet and delicious that was homemade. There were usually homemade cookies, cinnamon rolls, fresh pies for my daddy or a homemade cake. Plus, my brother and I were always out riding our bikes or playing and when walking or riding to our neighbors we would find pop bottles tossed along the road and would collect them and go to the little So-Low market and cash in our pop bottles for penny candy and gum. Yet I had this desire for that double mint gum. It must have been those twins that got to me is all I can say. But here I am before leaving for VBS I find myself in my parent’s room looking at that gum. I was not one to disobey my parents and especially not my momma. She was so good, and we just didn’t give her a lot of trouble Plus, we all knew if we did, and daddy found out we would be in more trouble. So, I was not looking for trouble I just wanted some gum. I was teased by my sister and brother as being mommas’ pet, her baby and I never liked upsetting her. Little did I know that my decision in that bedroom, me alone with that gum, would lead to the most important decision and day of my life. .I am so thankful that even though I did not get caught by any person that God who is all knowing and ever present knew every thought I had that day and every move I made and the most amazing is this, God loved me enough to send His only Son Jesus to die for me and to take my sin upon Himself. He who knew no sin was -going to take my place and the death sentence I deserved Jesus died to set me free from the bondage of death and sin and to redeem me as His own and offer me a place in the family of God where I could be joint heirs with Him. Praise God that He Loved me so much and that Jesus loved His Father even more and He said not My Will but Thine be done. How beautiful a love that it convicts the heart but does not condemn the soul. Now at 9 ½ years old I had no knowledge that this what was happening so what your about to read is the reality of my struggle with the flesh that day.
Nancy: But Mom said no.
Gum: I will double your pleasure and double your fun.
Nancy: but Momma said no, I can’t. I would not be right.
Gum: ok miss out but you know your momma, she’s a fair lady and if your take me and you just say you did not then she won’t know because Mike and Dorine will both be saying they did not take the gum because they didn’t, you keep a straight face and do what they do, and no one will know. No one is going to confess because they did not do it, so no one will know you did it. A perfect plan.
Nancy: But it’s not true.
Gum come on it won’t hurt anyone, and you will get double the pleasure and fun and you will still get to head to vacation Bible school for more fun. Just don’t say a word about what you are going to do. It’s our little secret.
Nancy: it’s not right, but you are right no one will ever know it was me. Dorine won’t know if it was me or Mike. Mike won’t know if it is me or Dorine. Mom won’t know which one of us is telling the truth because Dorine and Mike are going to get upset, they are getting accused but if I act just as upset like them then no one will know who did it and mom won’t know either. Go for it you know you want to just do it.
Ok then well I better cover my tracks if I am going to do this so I can’t have the gum missing and I don’t want to throw the wrapper away and chance getting caught. So, I will take the gum and fold the silver wrapper back and carefully slide it back into the green sleeve and put it in the middle. The Perfect Plan.
Out the door I went with my gum and on my way to vacation Bible school to learn about Jesus. Before I got there, the gum had lost its flavor and I thought “what you are kidding already. That is not double fun and certainly not double pleasure Disappointed.
I got to church, and you will never believe it. I must throw away my gum. No chewing gum allowed in the classrooms. What! Do you have any idea what I have had to go through to get
