DEDICATIONS
Heather would like to dedicate this book to her brother Mal and her sister-in-law Carolyn.
Doug would like to dedicate this book to his mate Heather and all the runners who appear along the Wynnum Esplanade at various times of the morning.
Heather Coombes, compiler of the quotes and meditations and composer of some
Heather was born in India with cerebral palsy, which affects her ability to move comfortably or speedily. Consequently, she spends much of her time in a wheelchair. Her first published book, Marathon Wheeler: Living with Physical Disability , is a memoir that marks her Australian educational experiences in mainstream and special schools. Reflections of hospitalisations and rehabilitation also feature. University education in the arts, librarianship, and theology have opened doors for her as a career as a librarian and later as a chaplain in disability and aged care within the Uniting Church in Australia. These experiences are viewed through the lens of a persevering “wheelie” user.
Her interests in retirement include reading biographies and murder mysteries. Heather believes in the great therapeutic value of books, knowing that an inspiring book read at the right time can breathe life and purpose into a flagging reader. Heather loves period drama on television and enjoys swimming. Writing and church involvement adds zest to her life.
Her second book, The Many Faces of Grief: Pathways to Healing , discusses bereavement, pregnancy loss, COVID, PTSD, etc.
This third book, God’s Paintbrush at Dawn , had its origins as Doug e-mailed Heather beautiful images of sunrises during a time of sad bereavement.

Doug was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia. He started work in the Queensland Public Service.
He was called up for National Service in 1968 and spent two years in the Army, including 12 months in Vietnam.
After leaving the Army, he rejoined the State Public Service and spent the rest of his working life in various government departments.
In the year 2000, he retired and now wonders how he had time to work.
In 2003, he and his wife Val moved to the Wynnum area on Brisbane’s Bayside.
Doug is an avid reader, reading mainly military and crime books.
He is also a cricket tragic and spends many hours watching the game on TV.
Doug also swims in squad and runs three or four days a week.
Being an early riser, he loves watching sunrises over Moreton Bay. He says running before and at daybreak is the best part of the day. It gives him the feeling of new beginnings. Dawn makes running beside the bay at Wynnum an absolute pleasure.
As soon as he purchased a mobile phone with a camera, he started photographing the local early morning displays.
He and Val met coauthor, Heather Coombes, a fellow nature lover, at Redlands Uniting Church, Cleveland. Doug and Heather fast became mates, and soon he was e-mailing her photos of the sunrises.
