Description

Integrity, pastoral care and authority lie at the heart of Christian leadership and indeed, following Jesus in any capacity, and they are also critical in state governance and Christian higher education. The articles in this book, the product of the 2017 conference of the Africa Society of Evangelical Theology, address these themes and other topics relating to the spheres of government and education in Africa to enhance our understanding of the challenges faced in African contexts. A wide range of Christian scholar-leaders provide a way forward for other church and institutional leaders who are seeking to faithfully fulfill their responsibilities of stewardship and instruction. Corruption, civil disobedience, good governance and formation of Christian leaders are matters that are becoming increasingly relevant not only in many African countries but across the world, and this book is a valuable resource for thoughtful reflection and guidance on these important subjects.

Because a nation is the sum total of its institutions, when these are in trouble, that nation is in trouble; when the institutions are well run, there is bound to be health and positive growth not just for those institutions but for the nation as a whole. Governance and Christian Higher Education in the African Context focuses on two key contributors to health and growth of a nation: governance and higher education. The topics discussed, in the light of Kenya and Africa, are contemporary and urgently relevant. Many of the perspectives are informed by research making the discussions inviting, interesting, often incisive, and worth reflecting on by any leader in similar contexts. The volume is a useful tool for anyone interested in sharpening and deepening their personal reflection, perspective and approach to a Christ-honouring leadership style.

Governance and Christian Higher Education in the African Context is one of the books that explores the commonalities and convergences of realities in Christian higher education in Africa. The critical views brought out by the researchers offer many aspects of the challenges affecting governance and education in general but specific examples also provide further understanding in Africa. By looking at themes such as authority and corruption, the volume evaluates the negative impact this has on education and governance. As well as these, the volume also explores other aspects such as the integration of Christian faith in higher education, especially the development of theological colleges to private chartered universities. The volume is based on biblical principles thus making it a significant book for researchers on the realities of education in Africa. I commend it to Christian institutions of higher learning and the churches that form the boards of those institutions. The book will also be of value for students as they endeavor to research and write and make thinking visible. It is both engaging and coherent, and it charts the important area of Christian higher education and it brings it into fruitful conversation in Christian theology.
