Introduction
R esponding to the need for a comprehensive and up-to-date reference work for pastoral ministry. L EADERSHIP , a practical journal for church leaders (published by Christianity Today, Inc.), teamed with Baker Book House to develop a set of three Leadership Handbooks of Practical Theology to cover the full spectrum of ministry practice. This first volume, with nearly two hundred articles by a hundred writers, speaks specifically about Word & Worship the priestly, prophetic, and sacramental responsibilities of a parish minister. Coming volumes on Outreach & Care , along with Leadership & Administration , will round out the series.
How to Use This Book
While many of you will want to read this series from cover to cover to augment a systematic understanding of the practice of ministry, others may reach for this volume seeking specific reference information. Since articles are arranged topically rather than alphabetically, a word on the book’s logic will help you understand how to find the appropriate articles. Here is a suggested method:
• Turn to the table of contents. This, of course, is a comprehensive listing of the articles in this volume. The titles have been kept simple and direct to indicate the subject matter covered in the articles.
• Note the seven main sections. Parts I through VII Preaching, Worship, Music, the Lord’s Supper, Baptism, Weddings, and Funerals denote the main subject areas handled in this volume. Questions of ministry practice that fall within these areas are likely to be covered within the various sections.
• Look for a main essay that matches your subject. Each section is divided into several chapters anchored by a main essay. The chapters also include a number of briefer articles (sidebars). The title of a main essay shows the subject covered in the chapter, and there are 38 chapter essays to cover the full sweep of subjects.
• Check the brief articles accompanying the chapter essays. The sidebars to the main essays cluster in the subject area the essay addresses. Each one briefly touches on a specific aspect of practical ministry, offering background, insight, and ideas. If you haven’t found an essay that meets your specific need, you will probably find one of the 147 sidebars speaks directly to it.
• Take a trial run. Let’s say you want to teach new members about your worship service, and the subject of benedictions comes up. You turn to the table of contents and find “ Part
