Description

G - E - T.Three simple letters that form a simple word that defines the world in which we live. We strive to GET AHEAD in our careers. We seek to GET CRACKING, GET A MOVE ON and hurry to our destinations. Sometimes, we struggle just to GET THROUGH THE DAY. Our lives are dominated by acts of GETTING.Perhaps the time has come to GET REAL and step outside of our constant desire to get more worldly stuff of no lasting significance and learn to seek after the things of eternal value. The authors of this book seek to reverse our ways of thinking that have been twisted and redefined as a result of living in our "getting world". Only when we abandon our all-too-human desire to acquire and discover ways to obey the Lord through giving to Him can we truly experience all the blessings God has to offer.Let's GET going!

Acknowledgments

From Marcus R. Farnell, Jr.:

I would like to thank my fantastic wife Kim for her endless support and encouragement in life, ministry and this book project. I would also like to thank my three daughters who finish out my sorority house: Jessica, Macey and Hannah. I am blessed to share my life with such a beautiful wife and daughters! They are an endless source of joy and inspiration. I must also thank the fantastic, passionate and ever-maturing body of believers at CrossRidge Church. Their desire to grow into fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ keeps me sharp, refreshed and blessed. This book is part of the wonderful story God is writing in our church family for His glory.
Go God go!
From Jesse S. Greever:
I would like to thank my beautiful wife, Erin, and two lovely daughters, Eleanor and Opal, for enduring my work on this project during my free time. I would also like to express my gratitude to Christopher Dixon for his insight and help with polishing the final manuscript.
I would also like to thank the people of CrossRidge Church for following the Lord’s leading and giving sacrificially of themselves during the Ninety Day Challenge. It was truly inspiring to go back and revisit the tremendous outpouring of those who took part in the Challenge. What a pleasure it was to write about God’s glory told through His story at CrossRidge Church.
From both authors:
We would like to collectively thank George W. Bewley for his tireless efforts fact-checking the manuscript and designing the cover. We are truly blessed that you took the time to walk with us through this process.
Preface

Every single one of us is a giver.
We give time and effort to our careers and our families. We give energy to our favorite activities outside of our responsibilities in the home and at work. We give love and encouragement to family members and close friends.
In essence, our lives are defined by a long series of transactions, consisting of giving and getting . We give time to completing education, and we get a degree. We give our efforts to our careers, and often we get recognition, increased wages and promotions. We give love to our family members, and we get love in return. We give gifts at Christmastime and we get adoration and gratitude from the recipients.
Let’s face it: giving is encoded in our emotional DNA. In many ways, giving comes quite naturally to us. As Christians, we are also required to give. God desires for us to give of our time, our talents, our encouragement (to other believers), our love and adoration, our worship and our praise. And yes, God earnestly pleads with us to honor Him with obedience in the discipline of giving our money.
This book is about giving. And while giving to the Lord encompasses all areas in the aforementioned list, the specific focus is on giving of financial resources. Unarguably, most Christ-followers the world over give of their non-fiscal resources without much hesitation. But when it comes to financial stewardship, tension arises in the hearts and minds of believers.
We certainly and whole-heartedly endorse the idea that every person who claims Jesus Christ as Lord should give faithfully in every area of their lives. But for this book, with very few exceptions, giving refers to financial stewardship.
Introduction
WHAT ARE YOU, CRAZY?
Decades are often defined by events that occur during them that have lasting consequences which can resound well beyond the confines of a simple ten-year period. The 1860s are clearly defined by the bloodiest war in American history: the Civil War. The 1930s are defined by the Great Depression and the tremendous destitution that accompanied such an economic collapse. The 1940s are defined by World War II, the 1970s by Viet Nam and the prevalence of disco music, and the 1980s by electronic music, the birth of the yuppie, and the AIDS crisis.
So what about the new millennium? What defines it? Clearly, the early part of the first decade of the Twenty-First Century is closely associated with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq. But starting in the latter part of the decade, something else began to characterize the times. After many years of relative abundance (aside from some minor hiccups here and there), the gravy train of affluence dramatically sputtered. Markets bucked wildly in erratic peaks and valleys like a mechanical bull. Foreclosure rates reached a fevered pitch as many previously financially secure families lost their homes as their ability to pay the mortgage diminished. Seemingly impervious institutions like massive banks, insurance companies and car manufacturers faltered and collapsed as the economy worsened.
And the horrific roller coaster was not quite ready to stop. As companies saw their bottom lines plummeting, cost-cutting measures required massive downsizing. Droves of formerly gainfully employed professionals found themselves without an income and no immediate prospects for work. Homeless shelters, already filled to capacity, struggled with an even greater influx of families in need. The value of the US Dollar declined rapidly. It seemed that we were on a runaway train engulfed in flames headed for a ravine after a bridge-collapse.
In the midst of the crisis, charitable giving nationwide dropped off. Furthermore, regular giving at churches clearly took a massive hit as well. This was particularly evident at CrossRidge Church in Little Elm, Texas. Throughout the first half of 2010, giving decreased dramatically, forcing the elders to make some very difficult decisions. At times, the ability to make payroll was even in question. Indeed, hard times had fallen on CrossRidge.
It was at this critical juncture that God decided to issue a challenge to the members of CrossRidge Church to reexamine financial priorities and give to Him in a manner prescribed in Scripture. Conventional, worldly wisdom might question such a move as clearly insane. After all, a pastor getting in front of a congregation already in financial dire straits and making a plea for obedient and sacrificial giving to the Lord could possibly be a recipe for a mass walk-out during the sermon series.
But the calling was strong, and in a gigantic leap of faith, a seven-week series in May and June of 2010 entitled “Treasures” was delivered that called upon the members of CrossRidge Church to step up and answer the call to faithful fiscal stewardship. The series culminated in the initiation of the Ninety Day Challenge, a time of testing the Lord with respect to the grace of giving (as believers are called to do in Malachi 3:10).
What followed was something only God could have imagined. Not only were the church budget needs met and exceeded, but members who pledged to participate in the Challenge and followed through received blessings, both tangible and intangible, that de
