I NTRODUCTION
Life-changing leadership is the desperate need in every church worldwide. Such leadership is the key to building anything that will become life-giving and have a lasting impact. God is calling leaders today to be great leaders—not just good or average, but over-the-top—and we are committed to helping leaders grow into that calling. Together we can build great churches worldwide!
As leaders, we know that we must prepare ourselves, better ourselves, make changes and keep growing. After more than four decades of being a leader, I am convinced that leadership is the determining factor for most everything achieved in God’s kingdom. I’m sure that most who pick up this book are good leaders, not weak or defective in character or ministry skills. They are most likely doing what they know to do, and doing it with all their heart. The fact is that leadership is a demanding calling, and leading Christ’s Church is a high calling. The measure of a true leader is not how great the individual becomes, but how great the team becomes.
I’ve witnessed some great leaders in action as communicators, dreamers and highly inspirational people of influence. But what about the teams those leaders work with? Are they also great? Do team members dream big dreams? Are they world-class leaders? Our call as leaders is to build great leaders who build great churches. Great leaders are always growing—always striving to improve both their own leadership and the leaders around them. We must push the boundary lines to move beyond the normal or usual, but we don’t have to do that alone. Let’s push with our team and go to the next level together.
Leaders are pioneers, venturing into unexplored territory and guiding their followers to new and often unfamiliar destinations. They get people going someplace. They must take risks, rejecting the maintenance mentality.
Let us be life-changing leaders who build life-changing teams to shape life-changing churches. Let’s envision what can be gained by building the greatest teams possible, using our unique gifts and strengths. We can stay on our mission, possess right motives, and give our followers a great win.
This book is about the teams we build and the church culture that supports a team-building atmosphere. Life-changing leaders are resource finders and releasers. They are focused on the future and dedicated to doing whatever it takes to get there. I’ve heard it said that the most significant things ever accomplished were done by people who were either too busy or too sick! Great leaders are those who, when they feel like they are pushed to their limits, push a little further.
Those who lead churches are people of amazing influence and incredible responsibility. I feel a great burden to make others great—to raise up spiritual sons and daughters who carry the vision and become the dream team we need today.
