Description

In the literature published about Sai Baba of Shirdi, his divine sports are generally described overlaid with the emphasis on Hindu orientation and euology so as to create devotion in the readers' mind for him as a Hindu God or Deity. This has led to creation of his idolatory. There is hardly any literature available that deals with his spiritual mystic wisdom, which can be seen interspersed in his conversations and occasional seemingly, bizzare utterances on certain occasions. He used to suggest certain books to his close devotees for Shravan, Manan and Nidhidhyasan in the conclave of the learned ones among them, and also at times himself making their expositions in his conversations. In the present book an authoritative attempt is made to delineate The Spiritual Mystic Wisdom of Sai Baba based on integration of Sahaj Raj Yoga, Karm Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Jnana Yoga as he used to refer to devotees for their spiritual pursuits. Acharya Purushottamananda, former Professor of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, was born on 28" January, 1935 in a Jat Zamindar family with historic tradition of valour and patriotism in Tehsil Iglas of Aligarh District. He came in contact with the Revolutionary movement for the independence of India, and the Arya Samaj Movement under the legendary leadership of Raja Mahendra Pratap of Mursan. He received his education leading to the post-graduation in Political Science at Aligarh. He joined the government of India service in the Ministry of Rehabilitation, but later went for further education. He received Master's degree in Education from the University of Aligarh and also from the University of Manchester, UK. Presently, he is engaged in peripatetic mission by joining spiritual congregation of different orders, where he is welcome; but has no organizational links with any religious or cult organizations.

Sai Aarati
Oh Sai Baba, we wave lights before you, the bestower of happiness to the Jivas. Give us - Your servants and devotees rest under the dust of your Feet, burning (destroying) desires. You remain absorbed in Your Self, and show the Lord (God) to the aspirants. As one feels intently for you, you give him experiences of realization accordingly.
Oh Kind-hearted, Your power is such! meditation on your name removes our fear of the Sansar. Your method of word is really unfathomable as You always help the poor and the helpless. In this Kali age you -the all pervasive Datta, have Incarnated as Sagun Brahma. Ward off the fear of Sansar of the devotees, who come to You every Thursday, so as to enable them to see the Feet of the Lord. Oh God of Gods, I pray that, let my treasure be the service of Your Feet. Feed Madhav (the composer of this aarati ) with happiness as the cloud feeds the Chatak bird with pure water, and thus keep up Your Word. Amen!
Bow to Shri Sai - Peace be to all
Foreword It is a signal honour to comply with my friend, nay my elder brother dear Puru, to express my un-inhibited views on the book written by him – SAI SPIRITUAL MYSTIC WISDOM. The author and I have been close friends since our graduation and Post-graduation days of nineteen fifties. I write this with the specific purpose to let the readers know that we, the author and I, have grown up with our frailities and strengths. He is magnanimous, candid, and out-spoken to the faults; and a man of rectitude living. His spiritual and intellectual pursuits are of high standard. He is softer than the rose, where kindness is concerned; and harder than the thunder, where values are concerned, and he does not spare even the highest of the high to blast off faults which can be seen from his published works. Puru, as I always endearingly call him, and Sat, as Puru calls me, have been very intimate during our student days and ever since then. However, we are of different personality moulds – he being innately spiritual and I being vehemently agnostic by conviction. We have had long sessions of discussion with right to differ, but agreed on the core contentions of each other. Be that as it may, he has travelled a long way in his comparative study of scriptures of world religions. He possesses profound knowledge and wisdom of religions as propounded by world masters. His erudition and capacity to analyze the nuances of metaphysics, and unfailing faith in universal values that all religions of the world and their Avatars or prophets have propagated shows that rudiments of all religions convey identical message for the whole mankind based on ethical life free from cant and hypocrisy. Puru has finally veered in his thought – processes and practices to the teachings of SAI BABA of Shirdi. In Sai he has found spelling the well being of men, both worldly as well as super-worldly, by exhorting to be upright human beings. In the instant volume, the author has convincingly argued that what Sai Baba of Shirdi has said is not anything new, but he has restated and reaffirmed the fundamental pursuit that a common human being should pursue in one’s life. He shunned and deprecated the false notions and manifestations of bigotry, though in subtle ways, which many a not sanguine ‘Sadhu’ and preacher exhorted to beguile the people in the name of God and ‘gods’. Sai Spiritual Mystic Wisdom is the unique book ever published. It clearly describes spiritual wisdom of Sai Baba of Shirdi as a Sadguru. The book goes beyond and deeper than any other available books including the latest ones entitled HOW I FOUND GOD? by Yogi M.K. Spencer and THE FAQIR by Ruzbeh N. Bharuch. The controversy raised by Shankaracharya of Dwarakapeeth whether Sai Baba, a Muslim Faquir, should be worshipped as God has been authoritatively dealt with. As I understand from the narration in this book, the author’s main aim is to explain and paraphrase the fundamental teachings of Sai Baba of Shirdi in his own simple, mendicant but rectitude life. Sai Baba of Shirdi, a simple man of his time, has now transformed into a cult and Shirdi has become Vatican. It is more of a tourist destination rather than pilgrimage, where people could imbibe his true preaching of God and man’s inter-relationship. Incidentally, let me also allude my own feeling of frustration when I see the virtual vulgar manifestation in Jagratas/Jagrans and Sai-Bhajan Sandhya’s; and the so-called spiritual soirees of various mahants and self proclaimed God-men. Their aim, in my humble opinion, is to exploit the common man by intimidating him of evil consequences in life if one does not conform to their view-points and their way of life; and in the bargain they extract material favours. Organized religions are worth for their positive aspects, but many a cult put themselves between God and man. We turn to God for existential questions, since creation is better than destruction, and love is better than hate. Sai Baba cared far more for harmony and love among men of all Faiths rather than creating any religious cult in his own name since at the core of all religions is the same human truth. Again, reverting to the contents of the book, the author very painstakingly explains the metaphysical aspects of Sai’s philosophy of life; and at a great length very assiduously explains comparative similarities with Gita, Ramayan, Bible, Quran, Vedas, sermons of Sikh Gurus and other scriptures. Sai Baba encouraged enquiry into the Self called ‘inner quest’ to know: “Who am I?” and the answer is: “Thou art That.” For this to accomplish renunciation of the world is not required; but only renunciation of desires and annihilatiation of mind/ego by Atma-Vichar is necessary. Expansion of love of God is far better for a devotee than renunciation. The Self is that Immanent undercurrent which vivifies the mind and enables it to do all works. So Jnana , Karma and devotion all combine in the quest of the Self. Every form of devotion is good and true in the individual cases of personal God; but the mind must fall silent. When the Being is realized the personal God disappears as does the false ‘I’. Truth is mystical experience. Realization of oneness of Being is the highest wisdom and rare is the devotee who has realized his identity with God within through faith in his own divinity. In Nishkam-Karma devotion and action are implicit and only a Jnani can be a good ‘Karma-yogi’. Without the dissolution of ego there can be no Realization and without humility no true virtue is really possible. Vision of equality of all beings is true spirituality, Sai Baba demonstrated by his life so vividly described in the present treatise. The manifestation of spirit in the macrocosm and microcosm; the spiritual and material forces that constantly interact; the true nature of matter and spirit; body and soul and the mixture of Good and Evil in human nature are the moot subjects of which the votaries of metaphysics make endeavours to find an answer to the right method of worshipping God, and thereby enable common man to follow suit. These serious and subtle questions find an answer in an easy way in the present treatise. I have enjoyed reading the book, but I still hold on to my views that if men are to live life their own way blind faith in God must go. ‘Be man’ is my motto, and be not given unto dogamas, credulities and desist from worshipping pseudo God-man and spurious ‘Sadhu’. The Omnipotent, the omniscient, and the omnipresent verily is the Self to be realized by pursuit of Truth.

Preface
Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi was beyond orthodox or sectarian religious beliefs of both Hinduism and Islam and was neither Hindu nor Turk-Musalman in his essential spiritual moorings, but he transcended them both and remained an Iconoclast saint of the highest order manifesting grand Yogic powers over elements of nature as well as God-Realization. What he really stood for while living his mission in the holy land of Shirdi has been variously described by his contemporary as well as later biographers. Unwillingly or knowingly an account of their own religious orientations or vested
