Description

The storms of life threaten all of us at one time or another, leaving us feeling lost, alone and without any hope. We all face adversities in the name of relationships, physical and mental health, the pain of loss, work stress, finances and persecution. Our relationship with Jesus Christ does not always exclude us from all the unpleasant circumstances life sometimes throws our way. But the Bible makes it clear that when we turn our lives over to God and pursue Him wholeheartedly, He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6), no matter what our temporary situation looks like in the natural. The truth is, we are never alone, and there is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24), granting to us out of His great mercy an inexhaustible supply of power and love to weather any life-storm we face. Through it all, He ensures we are more than conquerors. (Romans 8:37)

This is the second of two volumes in a year-long daily devotional that highlights nearly a hundred of the most comforting and powerful verses on how God is our Shelter from the storm. Streamlined commentary unveils the truth of each passage and offers practical application to incorporate in one’s daily life. This devotional outlines the source material for your unwavering faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and offers biblical proof that we will be carried through the storm and rise above!

Introduction
I f you’ve read our testimony, Eight Weeks with No Water , you’re aware of the trials Christy and I faced concerning our son, Christian, and how he almost miscarried not once, but twice, resulting in a two-month hospitalization for my wife. That whole situation was easily the darkest storm we had ever faced to that point. After those traumatic events, conventional wisdom would dictate we should not have any more children. There was inherent risk beyond just pre-term labor. The emergency c-section with Christian’s delivery left Christy with some physical issues that, naturally speaking, would not be wise to risk another pregnancy. That we had two sons who were healthy was miraculous enough, and for a long time, we felt to leave well enough alone and just thank God we were able to have them.
And yet, a few years later, Christy felt this push to try for a daughter. When she first broached the idea with me, my response was, “Absolutely not.” But over the course of a couple months, I too started feeling a desire that in the natural couldn’t be explained. Even still, we knew it would be foolish to rush into another situation that could potentially turn life-threatening to my wife and the unborn baby, so we sought the Lord—not months, but years. Literally hundreds of hours in prayer seeking His wisdom, believing Him for a physical healing that would allow Christy to carry the baby with no complications. We asked Him why we even had this desire to have a daughter when everything in the natural world told us that was impossible. We would try to dismiss this irrational notion, but a few weeks later, here it would pop up again. After a series of supernatural encounters, we finally took a step of faith and conceived.
My wife miscarried at seventeen weeks gestation.
We won’t go into the details, but suffice to say, it was a more traumatic experience than the pregnancy with Christian had been, and the end result was a thousand times worse. We had brought Christian home at the end of that trial. We had nothing to show for this tragedy, except ongoing complications.
The pain of that loss, the physical and psychological damage the miscarriage caused, pushed us to writing this devotional. After everything Christy had been through with Christian, surely God wouldn’t have permitted this to occur. So rather than allow ourselves to get angry and embittered, we sought solace out of the Word, and from those times of healing and restoration, Shelter from the Storm was created. It didn’t take the circumstances away, but it did carry us through the storm.
More years passed. During the time it took us to research and write the first volume of Shelter , we felt that desire to try once again for the daughter we felt God had shown us. Only this time, we faced more obstacles than ever. Surely, we should never put ourselves in this type of situation again! And yet, we couldn’t dismiss the words and images we felt God had shown us concerning a daughter. We spent months trying to have God remove this desire that seemed impossible, maybe even foolhardy. But it wouldn’t leave, no matter how hard we prayed.
So, we took another step of faith. We conceived, and one month later COVID-19 hit. It would take a whole other book to outline what that was like, a high-risk (in the natural) pregnancy during a global pandemic.
Our daughter, Eliana, was born November 3, 2020, in perfect health. She’s amazing, a beautiful ball of energy, nineteen-months-old as we write this, full of life and joy. God had, indeed, answered our prayer: our rainbow after the storm, eight long years after we first prayed!
(Having a newborn is why it took so long to write the second part of this devotional.)
My father, James Maloney, who was our biggest proponent and advocate, encouraging us to write this devotional after the miscarriage, and supporting us unconditionally during the long ordeal of having Eliana, was thrilled to hear we’d finally received the answer to our prayer.
Of course, everyone was isolating due to COVID at the time. But we arranged for Papa and Nana to see little Eliana briefly the day we brought her home. They stayed over by their car, masked up, while we showed them this beautiful baby from under the tree by the side of our house. Mom and Dad were overjoyed, looking forward to getting to know this miraculous, tiny person once the pandemic started to recede. I remember Dad risked reaching out a finger and just quickly touching her teeny foot before darting back to the car.
My mother and father caught COVID in early December. Mom went
