#1

Jesus wants us to live differently, and he wants us to take up a challenge. He wants us to live in grace and walk in love, but it is not natural at first. We must practice it to become accustomed to it.

#2

Don’t plan on going to the gym, and don’t make a resolution to do so. Just go to the gym. Your life is a series of positive and negative experiences. Make your life about people, and you won’t regret it.

#3

If there’s anything to fear, it’s pulling back, not pressing forward. Fear of failure is often what holds us back from breaking our personal barriers.

#4

When we’re really walking with Jesus, our lives look just as expectant as people in San Diego do on the Fourth of July. There’s no question that something awesome is going to happen. Quit playing it safe and press the button.

#5

Failure is the biggest fear for most people. It’s difficult to put your passions into action when you’re afraid of failure. If others see you go all in, they’ll see you if you fail.

#6

It’s easy to be a planner when it comes to your future, but don’t forget to be present in the present and love those around you. By all means, keep planning, but don’t forget to be ready to start.

#7

It can be difficult to limit your distractions and stay focused on God. But you should try. It’s better to spend your time with the One who created time than to waste it.

#8

When we pray, it’s easy to get a little tongue-tied. We don’t always know what to say or how to do it right. But when there is a crisis, we turn into world-class orators when we pray. We know exactly what we want, right.

#9

We can't worry about what might go wrong when we're planning a new project or pivot. We have to focus on moving forward and repeating this process until we reach our destination.

#10

We often leave the risks and big life changes to college students or young professionals as if they were the only ones capable of handling them. But we spend our entire lives trying to figure out what we’re supposed to do with our lives.

#11

Love is not just about thinking about it, but about doing it. Love requires sacrifice and commitment, and these two things always travel together with love and action.

#12

You were not born to do what you are doing. It’s time to figure out what you were made to do and then do a lot of that. You may have to change your career path, or simply shift your schedule to prioritize your newfound passions.

#13

The things that keep us from pursuing our dreams are often the failures and letdowns we’ve experienced in the past. Don’t let who you were decide who you’re becoming. The setbacks we all face can be big or small. We can spend all sorts of time carefully folding paper, or we can throw it into the air and see if it flies.

#14

The same is true about developing the courage to be vulnerable. You can't earn big money without risking a lot. If you only put a little on the line, you won't see much of a return. You've got to go big to achieve your goals.

#15

We often give ourselves unflattering nicknames based on our pain. But remember that these are just labels, and God calls us His beloved.

#16

When we say we’re waiting on God, we often mean that we’re just stalling. We’re prone to this more than we’d like to admit. When we pray more often and go on retreats to listen for God’s voice, we’re actually just stalling.

#17

God finds us in the holes we’ve dug for ourselves. Where we see our failures, God sees foundations He’s making.

#18

The hustle is the thing that separates us from our new creation. We can’t be new creations if everything stays the same. We need to quit something today, whether it’s a job, a habit, a hobby, or sport that is stealing us away from the ones we love the most.

#19

God never cares about your grades, and He wants you to focus on His love, not your performance. He wants you to be captivated by purpose, regardless of whether it looks like worldly success.

#20

God doesn’t fear our doubts. He knows we struggle to believe, and He isn’t surprised when we don’t understand what a God who says He surpasses all understanding is doing. We need to get real with God about our doubts so he can be Jesus enough with his grace.

#21

We should welcome people who are different from us, not because we have to, but because it is the right thing to do. It is much more enjoyable to be who you are when you can be authentic with others who are also who they are.

#22

Love doesn’t follow the rules we try to set for it. It lives on the move, not in containment. It can’t sit still for long because it’s too eager to find people to express itself to.

#23

God is more interested in where we’re headed with Him than all the places we’ve gone alone. He’s not impressed with our flashy social media posts if those pictures tell a story of a life lived without Him. He wants to be in the mix with us.

#24

We can’t count on yesterday’s faithfulness to carry us through tomorrow’s problems. We must get back to where we started when we first heard about grace: living out the message of Jesus, not proving ourselves right.

#25

God is not concerned about the outcomes of our endeavors. He is simply interested in having us live in grace and love while we try. He doesn’t care what jersey we wear, as long as we are His.

#26

God is not an angry father who is disappointed by our every move. He is proud of every step we take, no matter how small. Go make yours.

#27

We often use other people's metrics to define what was a success and what was a failure. We often define our success by the results we achieve, when in reality, our success is measured by the efforts we put in.

#28

Faith is not about figuring out what we’re able to do. It’s about deciding what we’re going to do even when we think we can’t. Children are the ones who should be our guides because faith isn’t about what we’re able to do.

#29

In the Bible, there’s a story where Jesus wiped some mud on a blind man’s eyes, and the man saw colors for the first time. Jesus strolled up to a guy who had never walked before and said, Get up, take up your mat and go home.

#30

Jesus was not confusing, though. He asked His friends to do simple things that were not easy, like give away all their money like they wouldn’t need it tomorrow. He asked others to welcome both the popular speaker and the weird uncle.

#31

God already took care of the issue of whether we’re loved or not. We’re loved and belong because we were born. It doesn’t matter whether we lose the game with a strikeout or hit it out of the park for the win - we’re loved.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

Jesus told his followers not to tell anyone about the miracles he performed, for he wanted to do them in secret. He helped me realize that big love doesn’t need to attract big attention.

#2

Jesus’s friend John tells this story in the Bible about Jesus and the woman who had been caught in adultery. Jesus asked where the Pharisees had gone, and they said they didn’t condemn her. They just wanted a hug.

#3

Love is something we become, not something we do. It is someone we become, like Jesus. When our identity is based on who we are as God’s beloved kids, we start to live like we’re just that.

#4

When we’re wronged, we get to see what’s inside of us. When people break our trust, we have two options: explode in anger or show a steady stream of love. We should always choose love.

#5

When we’re intentional about giving thanks for everything we come across, we can’t help but feel joy over the pure gift of another day. When our joy has become a habit, our love becomes a way of living.

#6

Jesus walked into a town called Samaria, where Jews weren’t supposed to go. He snagged a seat next to a woman at a well, and talked to her about the living water he could give her. He didn’t judge her.

#7

I began to seek out people who looked different than me, and I found that they had different worldviews. I eventually made friends with people who didn’t go to church, and they loved Jesus. They were accepted just as they were.

#8

We often make appointments with our friends, and when we do see them, we tend to only see them in a formal setting. This can make our interactions feel more formal, and I believe it dulls the sense of genuine connection.

#9

We can’t wait for inspiration to hit when we’re trying to meet a deadline. We can’t wait for all the feelings to catch up to us before we give away extravagant amounts of love. Selfless love is always costly, but friends never forget it.

#10

Loving people the way Jesus did means being constantly misunderstood.
