DEDICATION
T HIS BOOK IS dedicated to my mother, Arlene S. Grant who raised me in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Her ministry in my life gave me a hunger and thirst for the things of God and a desire to know Him for myself. It is also dedicated to my wife Dione Y. Grant who walks with me in harmony and peace in this blessed life we share. As I always tell her, “She is forever my greatest inspiration.” Finally, it is dedicated to my sons and daughters that minister to me consistently and gave me the ability to be able to study and put in the time the way I needed to. You guys rock always!
This book is dedicated to the above with all my love!

FOREWORD
I F YOU HAVE been struggling trying to understand the Bible, Bishop Troy Grant is your blessing. Because of his experience and struggle with the Bible, he determined to assist the rest of us and help us with our struggle. Thus, with this handbook he gives us keys “to help make the Bible easier to understand.”
Bishop Grant shares with us the importance of having a dictionary handy as we read the word of God. Words have meanings. You should not guess at what you are reading. He also shared that it was “life-altering” when he learned that these words should be put into context. Context casts shade on the meaning of words. Understand both!
The author informs us of the importance of knowing what agreement (Covenant) was in operation at the time of the scripture being read. The covenant adds context to the scripture. I started rejoicing as I read the brief summary of the fifth covenant. This is the agreement that God has graciously offered to me, and my sacrifice does not equal His blessings.
As Bishop Grant takes us through the major time periods of the Scriptures, we begin to see the progressive nature of the Bible. The failure of one era leads to the beginning of a new era and this continues until the good news is now proclaimed. What man could not do for himself, Jesus did for us. He also notes for us that some messages of the Bible are wrapped in types and shadows. We must not only expect types and shadows but also know their meaning. He blesses us with examples.
The author states that “The book of Revelation is awe-inspiring, mesmerizing and enduring, all at the same time.” I can say his short outline of the backdrop and message of Revelation is also the same. It was a great way to conclude the book and for the first time I realized Revelation was a great way to conclude the Bible. Bishop Troy K. Grant III blessed us with this handbook. Enjoy!

PREFACE
A HASTY AND/OR NOT thorough reading of the Bible could be frustrating or troubling to one who deems themselves to be a Christian. The Bible is the greatest book ever written, and although there are other so-called religious comparative works, there is really no book that can compare to the word of God!
If the Bible is going to edify us the way we need and desire it to, it is imperative that we know how to read and study it.
The Bible covers a plethora of topics, and without being dogmatic, faith is a necessary component in cognizing many of its grandiloquent truths.
There are a bevy of ways to go about reading the Bible, but few sources have been written to teach you how to study the Bible. As a minister, I have read the Bible several times. However, when I was ignorant to how to understand it, I read it with ignorance and pride.
The purpose of this book is to help make the Bible easier to understand, at least for a great many people. We will discuss concepts, themes, characters, etc. And I believe that you as the reader will walk away wanting to read the Bible more than ever before.
While reading this book, you should expect to learn, laugh, be encouraged, and receive revelation that facilitates your relationship with the Bible and your feelings about the Bible to be intensified, cultivated, and nuanced in way that they never have been before. Why would I say that? Because that is what happened for me when I learned some of the things, I’m about to share with you.
With no prior preparatory knowledge on how to determine what was literal from what was figurative, or what was the difference between the Old and New Testaments, my reading progress was shaky at best. I never doubted its truths, but I did become confused at times.
I share this because reading and understanding the Bible has, like they say in church, “brought me a mighty long way.” The Bible is a book that teaches you everything! What do I mean? I’m glad you asked. It teaches you math, science, history, English, and some chemistry. The Bible stimulates your imagination, grows your reading comprehension, and definitely broadens your vocabulary. At least it did for me.
Another thing they say in church is “There’s no secret to what the Lord can do. What He did for others, He’ll do for you!” I believe this is true because God is not a respecter of people. Therefore, I expect this book to be a facilitator in changing your life for the better. I expect you to be wiser, smarter, and more enhanced in multiple subjects because you have used this book to help you understand the Bible better. We are going to go on a journey together. And hopefully, it will be our first of many. So, let’s do this!
However, one day I heard this life-altering statement by Miles Coverdale:
“It shall greatly help ye to understand the Scriptures if thou mark not only what is spoken or written, but of whom and to whom, with what words, at what time, where, to what intent, with what circumstances, considering what goeth before and what followeth after.”
This was life-changing, awe-inspiring, and aptly became the catalyst for this book, along with one of my bishop friends in the ministry.
Another pertinent purpose of this book is to educate Christians and definitely preachers about some pertinent foundational principles of the Bible with clarity, skill, and scholarship so that it underpins a new confidence in their Bible reading and moves them with exceptional comfort to begin studying their Bible as well.
Because I understand the Bible these days, studying it is one of my greatest joys. It is my belief that after reading this book, not only will you have a greater passion for reading the Bible, but also your love for God will burgeon like never before.
CHAPTER 1
God Uses Words
T HE BIBLE IS written with words. Words are invariably important in every phase and arena in life. Words are what we use to communicate, barter, perceive, believe, think, and express ourselves. John 1:1 says. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
God does everything through and by His Word. Likewise, man is underpinned by a substratum of words. Our authority is capsulized in our words, our power is dispatched in our words, our understanding is cognized by words, and our prosperity is signified by our words.
According to Proverbs 18:21, “The power of life and death is in the tongue . . .” However, the tongue’s paramount function in this text is to help us unlock our words as well as elicit the requisite words from others that will augment and ameliorate our quality of life.
OK! I get it already, let it go already, you say, words are important! Don’t become impatient with me too quickly, let me explain my purpose for elaborating and delineating on the relevance and importance of words.
God uses words to express Himself. Therefore, if you are going to really have a satisfying and burgeoning relationship with God, you are going to have to get comfortable with words.
People who are scared, craven, or timorous when it comes to words will never understand the Bible. The Bible uses words the average person has never seen before. This can be overwhelming; trust me, I know.
It’s one thing to not understand
