Preface
I write this book not from of a head full of theological knowledge, but out of a heart full of gratefulness to Jesus Christ, my Savior. We are all sinners, saved by grace. When we call on the name of Jesus, He is faithful to forgive us of all our sins.
Here is a bit of my story.
I was raised in a small town in Indiana, and moved to “Big D” (Dallas, Texas), right after graduating from business college in the early 1980s. This was quite the culture shock. Let’s just say I felt like I was a kid in a candy shop.
The big city life and a newfound freedom of being on my own gave me many opportunities to try new adventures. Not all of them were things I am proud of. My twenties and thirties were adventures into the party lifestyle. When I give my testimony, I talk of sex, drugs, and rock and roll (discotheques in the 80s and country western bars in the 90s), but you get the picture.
The Word of God says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6 KJV).
Thankfully, I eventually did come back to God. Over the last decade, I have had an ever-increasing appetite for the Word of God. I pray that these pages will encourage you to want this same appetite.
Bon Appetit!
Acknowledgments
I first want to thank God for creating me for His purpose. I thank Him for placing in me gifts and abilities. I thank Him for giving me the courage to step out and live life abundantly and to the fullest. I thank Him for walking with me through the sorrow and grief of losing my mom and my husband within three months of each other. The pain of that grief prompted me to dig deep into my soul to find the plans and purposes that He had for me, despite the circumstances. It has been a great adventure. I can’t wait to see where He leads me next!
To my friend Keith: I would not have written this book without your motivation and encouragement. Thank you for helping me document the points of the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights in Chapter 6. I am grateful for your extensive knowledge of these precious historical documents.
I want to thank my pastor, Grant Cole, for teaching the Bible in such a way that caused me to hunger and thirst for more of the Word of God. Thank you also for having the faith in me to teach an adult Sunday School class at Living Stone Church.
Thank you to my friends, Gayle Moss and Emilie Sheppard, who offered to help me edit the pages of this book. It was an offer I quickly accepted.
To my friends and accountability group, Bobbi Carver, Emilie Sheppard, and Rocio Calle: you have stood by my side for the last fourteen plus years through a lot of doing life together. Without your support, I would not be the leader that I am today. I love each and every one of you.
Introduction
For the Word of God is alive and active. Shar per than any double-edged sword, it penetrates e ven to dividing soul and spirt, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the h eart.
—Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
What in the world does that scripture mean?
How can a word cut anything, let alone joints and marrow?
You have heard the saying “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me”?
Obviously, if you have lived more than a few years on this earth, and been in relationship with another human, you know the error of that statement. Words do hurt.
So, what is the importance of this scripture?
Marrow is the fatty substance in the center of our bone cavities. Without bone marrow, our bodies could not produce the white blood cells we need to fight infection, the red blood cells we need to carry oxygen, and the platelets we need to stop bleeding. Some illnesses and treatments can destroy the bone marrow.
Ligaments are bands of tough elastic tissue around your joints. The ligaments are so attached to the joints that they seem to grow out of the bone. Stretching or tearing them can make your joints unstable. No knife is sharp enough to cut between the two.
However, you did not pick up this book to get a biology lesson, right? Why the detailed description of joints and bone marrow?
God does not waste any words. He could have just said the Word of God cuts to the bone. Most of us have heard that phrase. However, He said joints and marrow. The marrow is the life-giving part of your bones. Your bones just hold your flesh in place, but the marrow is the life source.
The Word of God is your life source. If you do not know the Word, your life will feel hollow, like a bone without marrow.
The King James Version (KJV) of the Bible uses the words quick and powerful rather than alive and active in Hebrews 4:12. The Greek word for quick is zao and it means to live, breathe, or be among the living. Used as a metaphor, it means to be in full vigor.
The Word of God is alive, active, powerful, amazing, and life-changing living water.
I can’t explain it, but the Word of God has the power to speak to your exact situation. You can read the same scripture one hundred times, and each time it can speak to you in a different way, if you take the time to meditate on it and let it speak to you.
This book will be an adventure into the Word of God.
Life is hard, but God has given us His Word—the Bible—as our instruction manual.
An acronym for Bible is:
Basic
Instructions
Before
Leaving
Earth
How cool is that? God knew that after we humans messed up the garden experience by allowing sin to enter the world, life was going to get hard. Therefore, He gave us the Bible (the Word).
God is actually the author of the Bible, but He inspired approximately forty men to write the sixty-six books of the Bible. I say approximately forty because we have records of thirty-five authors, but we are unsure of who wrote the books of Judges and Hebrews.
It is important to read the Word. It is even more important to study the Word.
My prayer for you is that you will develop a deep love of the Word of God, a hunger and thirst for the Word of God that cannot be quenched by simply reading it. I hope you will dig in and search the scriptures for the hidden treasures. Take the time to meditate, marinate, and soak in the Word, and watch it speak to you.
Enjoy!
