FOREWORD

We often form an opinion of people the first time we meet them. at was surely the case when I first met Catherine Martin 20 years ago. She had matriculated at Bethel Seminary San Diego and had enrolled in one of my courses. Although the class was large—it was required of all entering stu-dents—she stood out from the rest primarily because of her glowing smile. Always cheerful and lively, she reminded me a bit of Katie Couric. Come to think of it, I can’t ever remember seeing Catherine when she didn’t have a smile on her face. As it turned out, she had much more than just a bubbly personality. She quickly demonstrated the diligent and systematically determined side of her nature as she waltzed through all three of my courses in which she had enrolled. ose who know Catherine will not be surprised to learn that she earned an A in each of them—effortlessly, as nearly as I could gauge. It soon became clear that she was an exceptional student, concluding her formal education at Bethel with a 4.0 GPA and graduating summa cum laude with a master of arts degree in theological studies. Catherine’s ministry in the service of Christ began long before she came to Bethel. She had worked for Josh McDowell and Bill Bright for sev-eral years, and she served as a women’s Bible-study leader for more than a decade, including during her time as a seminary student. It was only natu-ral, then, that she should found and direct an organization such as Quiet Time Ministries soon after graduation. Growing up in Chicago as a young Christian, I was advised by my spiri-tual mentors to spend a quiet time every day with my Lord. at meant that I was to read my Bible and pray every day—a worthy and important spiritual exercise. Some years ago I discovered that the phrases “quiet time” and “Catherine Martin” are virtual synonyms—or at least they are closely associated with each other in the minds of many people. I typed “quiet time” into Google and instantly gained access to more than two million references to that phrase. e third reference on the first page was about
