About the Author
Chapter 1
Early Days in Small Town America and Origin of American Community Values
One cool evening in January 1966 in a small town in California a small miracle occurred. The captain of the men’s swim team met the fastest and most capable woman on the women’s swim team. This unlikely meeting would have great meaning months later.
Luke was about to be born minutes before midnight. Luke was prevented from being born on time because he was forbidden by both his mother and her obstetrician. It seems, in retrospect, almost but not quite acceptable. You see, Luke’s mother was about to have her dream come true: delivering her baby boy on her birthday! Yet this could only be accomplished via subverting Luke’s original plan and intention to be born immediately when ready. Instead, Luke was prevented from being born for 4 or more minutes until his mother’s birthday arrived at 12 midnight. Luke’s first challenge in life was getting to and beginning his life with a first breath after a swift slap to Luke’s buttox…and life on earth began with his first breath of oxygen, four or more minutes later than Luke’s (and God’s) original plan and destiny.
Luke was just four years old. Two years earlier he had the distinct pleasure of entering preschool with his older brother, Peter. Preschool was Cambridge and Oxford to Luke and his brother, for at this age, prestigious institution names were not important or meaningful. The opportunity to learn and begin writing on our “tabula rasa”, our intellectual awakening or birthing moment had commenced. Peter, while quiet and reserved, had a voracious appetite for learning and reading as many new books as possible in the preschool library and, on weekends, the library across the street from our small, rented home in the small, sleepy central California town where time, even now, stands constant and hidden from the continuum that rapidly changes other parts of this world. Comforting in a way, this town can be relied upon to provide a stable and safe place to raise children and move into the home you build several city blocks or a few miles from your parent’s home who can always be relied upon as the most faithful and economical baby sitters for growing children of nascent married couples. The neighborhood is predominantly hard-working, honorable, honest, God-fearing and God-respecting citizens, often mischaracterized by more radical and left-leaning extremists as “blue-collar, gun-toting, country folk.” Farmers, dairy owners, industrial workers, athletes, scholars, business persons, professionals all sprout from this tiny town, a sort of incubator for diversity in imagination, motivation, innovation to embrace all the world has to offer, then to change, influence, mediate world affairs as grown adults. Being raised in modest, small, obscure American towns with traditional values of respecting God, family, country and treating other humans as you wish to be treated, including mercy, grace, second/third/fourth chances if necessary, make these small towns incubators for great leaders. Humble and respectful leaders who derive from such small towns are constantly replenishing the constant need for great leaders throughout this great country, in large metropolis areas as they migrate out from small towns and, for those who stay local or migrate to other small towns, they positively impact all those around them whilst pursuing the American Dream, deeply ingrained in them by their parents values and beliefs of hard work and earning honest wages to advance your development and maturation as a Christian or other religion which supports equality and respect for all humans, the result of be given, as long-term infinite loan, to God and the church community during the first 18 years of their upbringing. After high school these small town wonders are confident and aware of their worth, value and uniqueness, created in the image of God, then enter the work place or institutions of trade learning or higher educational institutions / universities with a zeal for self-improvement and enlightenment via first climbing up to, then standing on the shoulders of enlightened world citizens who acquired wisdom, knowledge, hardships and heartbreaks long before them then, as a gift from heaven, were anointed into positions of teachers, educators, and professors. As many have said in the past, among the noble professions are teaching, God-inspired and directed church leaders, medical professionals, local leaders, good co-workers and town/city citizens who are selfless and generous with their time and assistance and nurturing behavior. By this definition, all professions, individuals, and citizens have the potential to be noble. With nobility, however, comes great responsibility. Individuals may be identified throughout the world
