H ow grateful I am that the contents of this book will draw you ever closer to your heavenly Father, stirring your heart with a greater passion to know the sovereign, great, and awesome God who hears and answers prayer. The four steps of prayer outlined in this book-praise, confession, thanksgiving, and intercession-will take you to a deeper level of prayer. They will build your faith, helping you to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is a God who reigns and that there is nothing He cannot do!
Over 30 years ago, my heart went to anxious fears as I sent my two eldest boys to a nearby junior high school. They were experiencing changing emotions, dangerous temptations, peer pressure, raging hormones, and challenges to their faith. I knew united prayer was the answer to my fears. I cried out to God with one simple prayer: Lord, who will pray with me? God answered my one simple, desperate prayer, and the following week five women gathered together to begin to faithfully intercede for our children and their school one hour each week.
I knew this hour had to be used wisely, for we were in a spiritual battle for our children s lives. We needed a strategic prayer plan to counteract the influences of the world, the flesh, and the devil that would rush like a tidal wave against them, intent on destroying them. We needed to stand in the gap for their very lives and the lives of the other children at their school.
This was a time to take action. I formulated the four steps of prayer to teach us to pray and to stay focused. When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, He gave them a beautiful, effective, and strategic way to pray-with the Lord s Prayer. In this prayer, we find the elements of our four steps. The format keeps us looking up, seeking the Lord s agenda, His mission, His purposes, and His will.
This book is written for any believer who desires to trust God irrevocably and become an effective, confident pray-er. These four steps are used in our Moms in Prayer International groups around the world. They can also be used in your personal quiet time, in family devotions, and in church prayer groups. W ith a baby in my arms and a toddler clinging to my leg, I listened to my husband deliver the news that would change our family forever. Ed and I had met while working as engineers on the space shuttle. As handsome as he was, I was attracted to his brilliant mind-and now I was pretty sure he had lost it. As my smart, scientific, and normally sensible husband started to explain how he had accepted salvation in Christ during his morning commute, my life flashed before my eyes.
I was blessed to grow up on the river banks of Cocoa Beach, Florida, a few blocks from the beach. From our beautiful home, I could hear the sea waves crash against the sand, beckoning us to come play. I was raised in a loving family with wonderful parents, two brothers, and a sister, yet we weren t a family of believers, and I lived the way of the world. I sought to fill the superficial desire of worldly lusts.
In whatever I pursued-whether it was sports, academics, or work-I strived for excellence. I loved being a trailblazer, going where few women had gone before, first as one of the few female lifeguards in Cocoa Beach, and later, after graduating from the University of Florida, pursuing a career i
