LIFE LESSONS FOR THE ROAD AHEAD
DENNIS TRITTIN
Dennis Trittin’s book really captures what I wish I had known when I reached that critical juncture between childhood and adulthood. The book is uplifting and encouraging, full of common sense and deep wisdom. Dennis writes in such a comfortable, engaging style that I couldn’t put it down! The book is as valuable to parents as it is to young adults.

In What I Wish I Knew at 18 , Dennis Trittin discusses the vital issues facing young people as they move into adulthood. In a relaxed and conversational manner, he presents wise advice, challenging us to reflect and redirect our life through better choices. While this book will resonate with young adults, parents, school counselors, and youth leaders will also find the book thought provoking and engaging. I am inspired to be a better parent to my high school and college age children and a better manager at work.

I have made great use of What I Wish I Knew at 18 in a variety of classes, such as Parents and Children, Individual and Family Relationships, and Life on your Own. My students respond well to the teen-friendly language of the text, and the accompanying student guide includes questions and writing topics that inspire useful discussion and written reflection. Trittin’s book has become a valued resource, and one I turn to often.

As a university president, I have the privilege of working with some of the brightest, most amazing young people. What often separates those who perform very well from those who struggle is the understanding of basic life skills. Dennis Trittin’s book provides a clear outline of the important things young adults ought to be thinking about as they enter adulthood. I wish I had this great resource when I was 18 and headed off to college. I am confident that students who consider these topics will be best prepared for a life of independence.

BECK A. TAYLOR, PH.D,

This book has been a tremendous asset to my teaching. I work with a very specific group of at risk youth with barriers in their lives that may prevent them from graduating. The book and student guide have had a great impact on my students, motivating them to look ahead at their future goals, become more productive citizens and, most importantly, putting others before themselves. I would highly recommend this curriculum to other teachers.

I have used What I Wish I Knew at 18 in Washington D.C. with dozens of young interns from nations all over the world. They have been unanimous in their appreciation and enthusiasm for what they have learned. The topics are beautifully relevant and practical in these critical years when boys become men and girls become women and the trajectory of their lives is determined.

A CKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Writing this, my first book, has easily been the most gratifying initiative in my life. It could never have been done without the countless people who have inspired me, taught me essential life lessons, and given support, encouragement, and love throughout my life journey.
My love, gratitude, and affection go to:
God, who granted me the experiences to write this book, and instilled in me the gift of discernment and a heart for kids.
My parents, Carl and Madge Trittin, who devoted their lives to the well being of their children, who demonstrated enduring love and commitment, who taught me to value the simple pleasures in life, and who emphasized the importance of relationships over things.
My wife, Jeanne, who has unselfishly loved and encouraged me throughout our marriage, who has inspired me with her extraordinary courage and endurance, and who has devoted her life to God, family, and service to others.
My two priceless kids, Michael and Lauren, who have given me untold joy, unforgettable experiences, and an incredible journey through the wonders of fatherhood. Many of the life lessons contained in this book came through my observations of and experiences with you. I am SO proud of you and who you are becoming!
My siblings, Rick Trittin, Jan Smits, and Julie Hartjes, who have loved and encouraged their “little brother” every step of the way, who unceasingly demonstrate the importance of family, who gave me my wonderful brothers-in-law, Ken and Les, and my sister-in-law, Pat, and who brought into this world my precious nieces and nephews.
My many friends from childhood to today, who have sustained me through life’s ups and downs and who have brought incredible enjoyment and experiences that are forever etched in my memory. From my younger days, Tom Wolter, Bruce (Lightning) Roskom, Rick (Waldo) Wulterkens, Ron (Dice) Lenz, and Patty Ebert. From today, Mike and Sandy Shipman, Mark Toone, Dick Leaf, Erik Ogard, Tom Monroe, Steve Skatrud, Traci Jones, Jon Christopherson, Monica Butler, Brian Tipple, Lynda Vandeventer, Sally Glover, Chuck Florez, Susan Bouterse, Scott Burrill, Mari Andonian, Rick Barney, Mike and Roseanna James, Sarah Cice, Jeanette Scott, Tim Cedarland, Jim Langager, Jacque DeGideo, Joe Helms, Jeff Kemp, Jenny Dubinsky, Debbie Schindler, Noel Meador, Mike Riches, Stephen Roddy, Ed McCahill, Cindi Witt, Bea McLeod, Linda Olson, and Muriel Clark.
My career mentors who believed in me, and showed me the way. I hope you know who you are.
My in-laws, Lea Urbani, Bill Urbani, and Mike Ingwerson who welcomed me into their family and have provided love and affection to our kids.
My editor, Arlyn Lawrence, who partnered with me and encouraged me as I created this book. You helped turn a cheese pizza into a meat lover’s delight!
My LifeSmart Publishing team of Tom Jonez, Dan DePriest, Corey Foster, Susan Browne, Doug Lawrence, and Heather Sipes. You help make it happen.
A BOUT T HE A UTHOR
Dennis Trittin grew up in the small village of Kimberly, Wisconsin, the son of a paper mill worker and at-home mother and the youngest of four children. Dennis received his BBA degree in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1976, and after spending three years in financial management at General Electric Company, headed west to pursue his dream as an investment manager.
Upon receiving his MBA in 1981 from the University of Washington (where he was Valedictorian), he joined Frank Russell Company (now Russell Investments)—first as a Research Analyst and later as Director of Research, Director of Strategy, and Senior Equity Portfolio Manager. During his career, Dennis helped grow the firm’s assets from $1 billion to $220 billion through leadership roles in investments, sales, and client service. Dennis was given awards for excellence, innovation, and fund of the year while at Russell Investments and earned his CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation in 1986. He evaluated thousands of investment management firms over his 28-year career and learned from the industry’s best and brightest.
In 2008, Dennis retired from his investment career to devote his life to helping young people succeed. He developed a financial literacy and life skills program at a local private school, where he also served as board chair and taught financial courses to students and adults in the greater Gig Harbor, Washington area. Dennis is committed to help fill the educational gap that exists with respect to leadership, life skills, and finance—thus, the inspiration for this book.
In 2010, Dennis founded LifeSmart Publishing, LLC as president, CEO, and author. LifeSmart’s mission is to inspire, equip, and empower the next generation to live purposeful lives of integrity and impact. What I Wish I Knew at 18 has since evolved into a leadership/life skills curriculum that is taught by educators and mentors worldwide to develop well-prepared young leaders. Further, he recently co-authored Parenting for the Launch: Raising Teens to Succeed in the Real World to encourage and equip parents for the milestone launch of their children into independence.
Dennis met Jeanne, his wife of 32 years (at this writing), in a finance class at graduate school. They remain happily married and are the proud and grateful parents of their two grown children, Michael and Lauren.
In addition to family management and non-profit board, church, and volunteer causes, Dennis spends time on the golf course, enjoying the company of friends, mentoring teens and young adults, following the financial markets, writing, traveling, and visiting the family’s condo in Door County, Wisconsin.
