Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The present volume is framed on the lines of the annual Course Of Elementary Lectures on Botany given in Glasgow University for more than thirty years. During that time the Course has been constantly remodelled and developed. The extended limits of a book allow the introduction Of additional facts, and the subject-matter has itself been in part expanded. But the main object, that of presenting the Plant as a living, growing, self-nourishing, self-adapting creature, has been maintained throughout the book, as I always endeavour to present it in the Lecture Room.
