Description

The Natural Bounty of China is an important book series of 60 titles that comprehensively documents the vast diversity of China's natural resources. China recognizes more than 1,600 products unique to the country - known as geographical indication products. This series describes these products in detail, with each single volume focusing on a particular region of China and the unique products cultivated there, such as Changbaishan ginseng in northeast China to the bean paste of Pixian (the "soul of Sichuan cuisine") in the southwest. From the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang to history-steeped Shandong and gorgeously scenic Yunnan, almost every place in the country has produced something that is readily identifiable with it. This series not only makes a major contribution to our understanding of the geography and agriculture of China, but also gives us a greater appreciation of Chinese culture as a whole. This volume looks at the abundant resources and products from the birthplace of Chinese civilization, Inner Mongolia.

Preface to the Series

China is a vast land that Nature has endowed with enormous resources. Since time
immemorial, generation after generation of wise, industrious people have passed down their
traditions and know-hows, resulting in a brilliant array of products such as the Changbaishan
ginseng in northeast China, the bean paste of Pixian (known as the soul of Sichuan cuisine )
in the southwest, the West Lake Longjing tea in the east, and the world-renowned Turpan
grapes in the northwest. From the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, the Guanzhong Plain
in Shaanxi, to the history-steeped Shandong and the gorgeously scenic Yunnan, almost
every place in the country has produced something that is readily identifiable with it. These
highly treasured products are what we know today as geographical indication (GI) products.
In 1999, the State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision enacted the Provisions on
the Protection of Products of Designation of Origin , and in 2001, the State Administration
for Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine enacted the Provisions on the Administration of
Designation of Origin . After years of implementation of these two sets of provisions, the
General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) enacted
the Provisions on the Protection of Geographical Indication Products in 2005. By the end of
2013, the number of products that were officially registered as GI products reached over 1,600,
including 24 products from or for overseas markets (14 being overseas products registered in
China and ten being products registered in other countries).
In an effort to promote regional features, spur on trade of local products, and spread
Chinese culture, the AQSIQ Science and Technology Department and the China Zhijian
Publishing House produced this book series after in-depth investigations, continual discussion
and revision. The AQSIQ provides valuable guidance in this process. The series exhibits the
diversity in culture and natural environment that have produced GI products through vivid
descriptions of the amazing stories behind these products from a unique perspective. The
many images tell a visual story of the special characteristics of the products as well as the
legacy of their craftsmanship, giving a complete portrayal of their special charm and how they
