Climate change is the topic of the century. It is a subject of discussion by sceptics, heretics and those that have immersed in it as a serious debate for engagement. In this volume, the matter is localised to the plateau bordered by the great rivers of Limpopo to the south and Zambezi to the north. Evidence has it that climate change is inducing immense environmental change hitherto unknown including water stress and droughts, heat waves and flooding. The effects span across all sectors – agriculture, forestry, engineering, construction and other socio-economic dimensions of life. When an issue becomes such topical, it becomes political but also courts policy debate. The thrust of this volume is to explore into climate change as an environmental concern begging government attention and requiring prioritisation as a shaper of our future, whether we set to put mitigation or adaptation measures in place, or we choose to do nothing about it, as sceptics would perhaps suggest.
The book explores climate change as a theoretical, policy, technical and practical debate as it affects sectors and rural and urban spatialities in Zimbabwe. Contributions explore such themes as regional research, gender, disaster preparedness, policymaking, resilience, governance, urban planning, risk management, environmental law, and the food-water-health-energy-climate change nexus.

Notes on Contributors Angeline Maturureis a Geography Tutor and Geography Teacher at Dzivarasekwa High 1. She holds an MSc in Development Studies with Women's University in Africa, a Bachelor of Arts with the University of Zimbabwe and a Diploma in Education. Her research interests are in Climate Change and Gender. Aurthur Chivambeis a Graduate ofBSc Hons in Rural and Urban Planning, (University of Zimbabwe). His research interests include socio-economic development, project planning and management and urban and regional planning for sustainability. Chipo Mutonhodza is a lecturer in the Department of Urban Planning and Development at Great Zimbabwe University. She holds a MSc Development Studies (Women's University in Africa) and a BSc Rural and Urban Planning from University of Zimbabwe. Currently she is studying towards an MSc Rural and Urban Planning at University of Zimbabwe. Her research interests are in spatial planning and disaster risk reduction, cultural heritage and urban planning as well as transport planning. She has six years’ experience working as a Town Planner in the Ministry of Local Government, Department of Physical Planning. Conillious Gwatirisa is DPhil Student with the University of Zimbabwe's Centre for Applied Social Sciences specialising in Public Policies (Public Sanitary facilities).He is currently engaged as a Part- Time Lecturer with Women's University in Africa lecturing the Environment and Sustainable Development Course. He holds the following degrees with the University of Zimbabwe; an MSc in Environmental Policy and Planning, a BSc Hons (Geography),a B.Ed (Geography) and a Diploma in Education (Geography).His research interests are in Water and Sanitation, Climate Change, Gender and Public Policies. Elmond Bandaukoholds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) with specialisation in local government from the University of Western Ontario (Canada) where he studied as an African Leaders of Tomorrow Scholar. He did his BSc. (Hons) in Rural and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe. His interests include participatory policy-making, policy innovation and policy diffusion,

public management, programme and policy evaluation, collaborative governance and the politics of urban development in cities of the global south. He has published 18 book chapters, 18 journal articles and is a co-editor to a book on peri-urban developments and processes in Africa with Special Reference to Zimbabwe which was published by Springer International Publishing in 2016. He looks forward to pursuing his PhD in policy studies or in urban planning, focusing on city-regions, economic development and social planning. Emma Maphosais urban and regional planner who graduated with a BSc Honours Degree in Regional and Urban Planning with the University of Zimbabwe in 2018. In 2017, Emma Maphosa was employed with Gutu Rural District Council in Masvingo Zimbabwe. Her research interests are in real estate property management, urban management and transport planning. Gladys Mandisvikais a holder of a BSc Honours in Rural and Urban Planning of the Department of Rural and Urban Planning, University of Zimbabwe. She once worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the same department. Her research interests are in urban development, transport planning and management and sustainable cities. Halleluah Mangombe-Chirisa is a holder of A BScEd dual honour’s in Geography and Mathematics from the Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) and an MSc degree in Population Studies from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ). Between 2005 and 2007, she taught at Nyava and Rutope secondary schools in Shamva district and Glen View 3 High School in Harare. Currently, she is a social scientist at Population Services International (PSI) - Zimbabwe in Harare. She has also worked as an independent consultant for the Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (ZIMSTAT), involved in national census exercises. Her research interests are population issues (especially reproductive health), resources mobilisation for communities and sustainability and resilience in urban and regional areas. Innocent Chirisais a full professor in the Department of Rural and Urban Planning. Since 2007, he has been researching on urbanisation, environment and housing among other related subjects. He completed his doctoral thesis on the stewardship of peri-urban areas and housing in Zimbabwe at the University of Zimbabwe in

2013. He has authored many articles in international peer-reviewed journals as well as book chapters. The articles and chapters cover an array of issues in urban planning and design, place stewardship, peri- urban settlements, community-based interventions and initiatives, social protection, urban policy, governance and management, women and gender debates, among other things. He has a special interest in the following research aspects: housing and shelter provision, planning ethics, planning education, social theory and planning, political theory and planning, disaster and risk management, environment stewardship and urban policy and governance. Currently, Professor Innocent Chirisa has been the Chairman of the Department of Rural and Urban Planning. Currently he is an Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Studies at the University of Zimbabwe. Liaison Mukarwiholds a BSc Honours Degree in Rural and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe. He is currently practicing as a Town Planner at Human Settlements Experts (Pvt) Ltd in Zimbabwe. Liaison is a freelance researcher whose researches focus on Urban Management and Governance, Environmental Design, Urban Planning Practice, Housing and Community Issues and Transport and Sustainability issues. He had published more than several journal articles and book chapters. Liaison participated in various academic researches as a research assistant. Nelson Chanzaa Senior Lecturer in the Department of is Geography, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Bindura University of Science Education. He is also engaged as a Research Associate with the Department of Geosciences, Nelson Mandela University in South Africa. He holds a PhD in Environmental Geography from the Nelson Mandela University, South Africa. He currently serves as a Board of Director of the Environment Management Board under the Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industries in Zimbabwe. His research contributions are largely in the area of citizen science in environmental issues, in particular, indigenous knowledge applications in climate change impact assessment, adaptation and mitigation strategies that are used by local communities. He also actively participates in national and international training and capacity building on mainstreaming climate change in development programmes and disaster management programming.

Patience Mazanhiis a student studying towards an honour’s in BSc Rural and Urban Planning at the University of Zimbabwe. Her research interests are in project planning, policy and project evaluation, land rights and social research. Queen Linda Chinozvinais a holder of a BSc Honours Degree in Rural and Urban Planning with the University of Zimbabwe and currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Rural and Urban Planning with the same institution. She is also a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the Department of Rural and Urban Planning tutoring different courses. She has also worked as a research assistant for different organisations. Spiwe Nyasha Mupukutaholds a BSc Honours in Rural and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe. Her research interests are sustainable transport and urban environment dynamics. Thomas Karakadzaia Masters student at the Department of is Rural and Urban Planning, University of Zimbabwe. He holds a BSc honours in Rural and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe. His research interests are governance, sustainable human settlements and development issues. Tinashe Bobois a Town Planner working with the City of Harare in the City Planning and Development Division. Currently, He is studying towards the MSc in Urban Planning in the Department of Rural and Urban Planning at the University of Zimbabwe. He holds a BSc Honours Degree in Rural and Urban Planning from the University of Zimbabwe. His research interests are urban informalities, land-use planning, housing development, urban policy dynamics and management. Verna Nel qualified as a town and regional planner at Wits University, and later obtained an MSc and a PhD through UNISA. She began her career at the Johannesburg Municipality and later worked in a private firm and national government before joining the Centurion Town Council. In 1998, she was appointed chief Town Planner at the municipality. She managed the City Planning function of the City of Tshwane from July 2001 to June 2008. In 2009, Verna moved to the Urban and Regional Planning Department of the University of the Free State as a Professor. She is an active researcher in addition to supervising Masters and doctoral students and teaching

responsibilities. Her current research interests are urban resilience and spatial governance. She is also part of the South African Planning Education Research Project. Verna also serves on the South African Council for Planners and is the chairperson of the Education and Training Committee. Wendy Tsoriyois a Lecturer in the Department of Urban Planning and Development at Great Zimbabwe University. She has lecturing experience in Zimbabwe as well as well as training experience in community capacity building and development in Zimbabwean marginalized communities. Wendy is currently studying for a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning. Her research interests are in areas of spatial transformation of urban areas, participatory planning and urban design and management. Wendy enjoys volunteering her services for the betterment of her community and spending time with her children who are also her source of inspiration. Zebediah Munetais a student studying honours BSc in Real Estate Management at the University of Zimbabwe. His research interests are in land management, property valuation and management of real estate investments.
