I n this book, we’re going to talk about rocks and minerals. So, let’s get right to it!

S cientists who study and classify minerals are called mineralogists. Mineralogists are a specific type of geologist. They can pick up a sample in mountainous terrain and determine whether their sample is a rock or a mineral. Mineralogists are more interested in the samples that are minerals because that’s their specialty area. They collect mineral samples and then go through a process to scientifically identify them. There are many tests to determine what type of mineral a sample is.

WHAT IS A MINERAL?
A mineral has certain physical characteristics:
It happens naturally and is formed by geological processes.

Crystal mineral stone

It’s an inorganic solid. This just means that it’s a solid piece of material that isn’t made up of plant or animal material.

It has a definite chemical composition. For example, if it’s gold, it’s made up of just one chemical element, which is gold. Some minerals are made up of two or more chemical elements.

For example, the mineral quartz is composed of two chemical elements, silicon and oxygen.
It generally has a structure made of crystals.
