following pages represent except for some necessary minor changes a course lectures given in the College Civil ngineeringCornellUniversity The course is an elective one intended for those students hose intention to enter the eld anitary ngineering calls for more special and detailed work than is required all Civil ngineering students upplement ng as it does the regular course in anitary ngineering it must preserve with out dup cation continuity in the two courses which is btained through the direct supervision theDean the College rofessorAwho also gives the general course These conditions may serve to explain some recognized pecul ar ities and omissions in the subject matter the following pages tolerated only on account the general work already done by students here specially studying that in which they wish to excel Aleading to the omission nother cause certain discus sions wh ch might properly be brought up under the title chosen lies in the fact that the lectures here given represent but one third the year s work the subjects ewageDis posal and ewer Construction being taken up in the other two terms the year Thus merely to serve the divisions the college year all questions constructive design and eld construction are remanded to another course lectures not conveniently included here It is believed that due acknowledgment has been made to the various books and periodicals and to the reports the promi ent engineers from which this monograph has been iii

Athe author has beenfteen years use in his classes enabled to prepare a second ed tion this little book partly for the purpose correcting certain minor errors and partly that certain additional material might b e inserted In recent years a great deal attention has b en given to the careful analysis the problem rainfall and run notably by MessrsGonly after muchregory and ordell and hesitation was it decided to omit any extended review their thorough detailed discussion The relation between rainfall and run is dependent upon man very uncertain factors and any close mathematical analysis way in wh ch water delivered to any area as rain is collected into one cha nel at a single point the area must include so many assumptio s that the result may be far from the truth al though correc t according to the theory followed It was decided therefore to again follow the method adopted in the rst e tion as being reasonably safe in principle and at the same tim e holding clearly before the student the chief factor that ent ers into the relation viz the impervious character the surface on which the rain fa ls eference is made however to more ma hematical treatment and anyone interested may consult the original papers if he so desires The use better jointing material for vi i ed pi e has made it possible to eliminate leakage entirely if su cient care be taken in constructionVarious asphaltic preparations and other patented articles are on the market and if properly use d wi ensure a perfectly water tight pipe line Th s fact modi es
RFA D DIT I som ewhat the earlier statements about necessary amo nt leakage to b e consi dered problems that havebeen added have been found very seful in af ord ng an insight into some of the b roader ques ions that enter into the design sewers as well as in giving the stu dent chance to apply his theory to a concrete example The book as a whole is no t material y changed and cont nued experience in l a ge classes has con rmed the author in bel ef that for the general course student inCconi t n ineering iv l ta ns the essentials sewer design so ar anged as tobe readily ntelligible to the average ind H O
