Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The first portions of this work were published as articles in T ke Electrician, commenced soon after my return from the Cape in 1891. Since that date the continuation of the work has only been possible at very short intervals of leisure, and was laid aside altogether during ten month's professional engagement in America in 1893. The work has, however, generally been brought up to date.
