Description

In Together at the Table, the husband-and-wife founders of Juliska, David and Capucine, share their philosophy on love and the art of living well. Sharing their family stories and traditions for celebrating life's special moments, they delve into the soulful, the whimsical, and the delightedly imperfect art of entertaining. Their alluring mouth-blown Bohemian glassware and delicately embossed dinnerware make the perfect centerpieces for household bliss. This must-have volume contains hundreds of inspiring ideas about indulging in playful celebrations, how to reinvent the classics by mixing and matching, and the elegance that can be found in both formal and casual dining. A culmination of culture, sentiment, and tradition, Together at the Table is the perfect muse for everyone seeking joy at the table and harmony in the home.

With deep gratitude, we dedicate this book to our parents, Jill John, and Vicky Bernard, who raised us with unconditional love and the joy of family, in homes that felt magical because they filled them with thoughtfulness and creativity. We also dedicate this book with deep love to our three children in the hope that they will cherish and pass down our traditions to generations of scallywags to come.

Introduction
Dear Friends,
We really wanted to call this book No One Lingers Wistfully Over a Paper Plate, but the wise powers-that-be talked us down . . . and in the end, we re glad they did. Being Together at the Table is one of the things we live for.
In our first book, we are thrilled to share gatherings around our own family s table, inspired by our British and French heritage but evolved for our modern life in America. After all, it was our passion for unforgettable entertaining at home that inspired us to create Juliska as newlyweds twenty years ago. That love story continues for us as a couple, at home with our three hilarious children, and at work with our exceptional Juliska team.
You won t find the entertaining and table setting ideas in this book out of reach or super fancy, as we too have limited time and resources! But we are passionate about creating togetherness, and have found that what s on a table has a curious effect on what goes on around a table . In that spirit, we re not just setting the table-we re setting the scene for future memories.
Ultimately, you are the architect of togetherness in your home. So as you flip through these pages, we hope you will replace our family with yours and find inspiration to author your own unforgettable gatherings for many years to come.
With Hugs Dishes,

Capucine De Wulf Gooding David Gooding Founders

Most of what you see in this old wooden breakfront has a very personal story to us, including a silver teapot etched with THE LOUVRE , and our hand-painted wedding Delftware by Deborah Sears from Oxford, England. Her paintings illustrate scenes of our courtship in France, England, New York, and our wedding in Laguna Beach, California. This collaboration planted the seed of a future collection that became Country Estate.
Architects of Togetherness
CURATE YOUR OWN TABLESCAPING TROVE
The most meaningful memories we share are often carefully planned and orchestrated by thoughtful people who are well prepared and intentional. They craft and cook and create glorious tables that captivate their audiences and create blazing moments of togetherness. We affectionately refer to them as Architects of Togetherness.
Many might think that having a tablescaping trove -a collection of your entertaining treasures, from cocktail napkins to cake stands-isn t necessary. To that we say: Au contraire! We don t believe any of these accoutrements are just stuff.
Where some see dinner plates and candlesticks, we see tools to fuel the beautiful blaze of togetherness. People who have the type of magnetic homes that draw you in, and that others love to come to, all have these tablescaping troves. What they re doing is more than hosting; they re intentionally cultivating moments that will stay with you long after the dishes are done. Their tablescaping builds on to traditions which create lasting multisensory memories.
David and I love to entertain, and knowing our tablescaping trove is stocked makes fetes that much easier to whip up. Ours is a curation of beautiful things that make gatherings and traditions that much more special: pedestals to elevate a birthday cake and celebrate its recipient; platters that transform a Thanksgiving turkey into a feast for the eyes. This trove is a personal collection of things you build up over time. Many of the items will have a great story behind them, like a saltcellar you discovered during a downpour at the Brimfield Antique Flea Market, or souvenir teacups picked up while meandering through an estate sale.

Collecting napkins with delicious details can transform your tablescapes.

Our tablescaping trove is always growing.

Curate your trove with joyful intention. Get a set of accent plates for every different holiday, a few colorful sets of glassware, and a smattering of fabulous statement pieces.
Many of the great houses in England maintain what are known as butleries, or butler s pantries. But a tablescaping trove can also be a humble closet tucked under your stairs, or a stash of tubs in your basement. What matters is keeping it all close at hand. You can organize yours in whichever way suits you best, whether by color, theme, or occasion. As long as it s all within fairly easy reach for those spontaneous gatherings and important occasions, you will enrich your memories and become an indisputable entertaining legend.
Accessories transform foundational dinnerware patterns into different looks for every event. If you re just beginning your table linen collection, it s worth investing in patterns (no one was ever dazzled by a simple white napkin). Stripes and florals can be intermixed to your heart s content, accessorizing them differently over the years in ways that will surprise and delight.
It s worth noting that any piece of fabric can be a tablecloth. Some people wouldn t dare put dry-clean-only material on a table, but I am not one of those people. I have used lace, throw blankets, shawls, and sarongs as overlays. I have used a satin Victorian-era textile as an overlay. Did I risk getting it stained with wine? Yes. Did somebody instantly spill their wine on it? Yes. But have I cleaned it, covered the spot strategically with a floral bouquet, and used it again and again? Also yes. Keats was right: A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.

We both gravitate toward bold colors, so we ve collected tableware in strong blues and vibrant greens.

We have inherited or purchased at estate sales plenty of silver serving pieces of different heights and sizes to add shimmer to our tables, such as this leggy samovar-traditionally used for serving tea, but great for any hot beverage.

If I can squeeze it in before the children wake up-it s wonderful to start the day with a little walk around the garden picking berries or a little bouquet of flowers.
Begin the Day Beautifully
A BAREFOOT FRANGLAIS BREAKFAST
Just as the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics are important, so are the openings and closings of your day. You don t need to hold a parade of nations or hire acrobats (although Mr. Gooding did hire a cellist in full white tails dress to play at our home at six A.M. before school on Valentine s Day). You do have the power to shape the trajectory of the day by starting it in an uplifting atmosphere at breakfast, and finishing it in a comforting and loving way at the dinner table. Most days we have a full breakfast at a pretty table because we believe that if you begin the day beautifully, the rest of your day will follow accordingly.
The French do breakfast right, from their steamy cups of caf au lait to the flaky pain au chocolat that puts mere mortal muffins to shame. We love nothing more than taking our first meal of the day en plein air . In the crisp early morning air, the fields are still dewy, the light soft, and the air scented with wafts of lavender, roses, and potential. It s to a lovely spot in this storybook setting that we whisk our favorite chairs outdoors to have breakfast together. It is the most invigorating, refreshing, marvelous way to start the day, and so energizing that caffeine is nearly (nearly!) optional.
Even when it s a bit chilly outside, we just gear up as needed. In order to ensure you can linger over your breakfast together in comfort, we ve learned a few tricks. First, bring a shawl or throw to wrap around your shoulders if a breeze picks up. Second, have the drinks you each prefer close at hand-here, that s Lady Grey tea for me and strong coffee for David. We placed a myriad of pastries on a tiered tray (such trays have been used on tables since the nineteenth century to serve multiple dishes without taking up too much space on a tabletop). There s no need to dash to your local patisserie in the wee hours for fresh croissants and brioche; you can pick them up the day before, then store them wrapped tightly in their paper bag overnight, tucking them in an airtight spot like your oven or bread box. In the morning, just crisp them up a bit by baking them for five minutes at 425 F (220 C).

Raspberries are a close relative of roses, so it s no wonder we love them. Adding to their gemlike beauty: superfood-level quantities of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.
