Executive summary

In March 2004, the HP Global SAP Solutions Team in Munich posted results of an SAP



Sales and

Distribution (SD) Standard Application Benchmark on the HP ProLiant BL20p G2 blade server

supporting

408 SAP SD Benchmark users

.

The benchmark was performed with the SAP R/3



Enterprise Release 4.7 software solution, Microsoft

SQL Server 2000 database Enterprise Edition, and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise

Edition operating system. The processors implement Hyperthreading technology, thereby providing

the system improved processor utilization. The server was configured with two 3.2-GHz 533-MHz FSB

Intel Xeon DP processors, 2 MB L3 cache, 8 GB RAM, internal storage attached to the embedded

Smart Array 5i Plus controller with a battery-backed cache for Windows and external storage in a

Modular Array 1000 Storage System attached to the Dual Port Fibre Channel Mezzanine card for the

database and the SAP system. With these results, the HP ProLiant BL20p G2 achieved the best two-

way two-tier SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark result when certified on March 2, 2004.

Interpreting the results

Compared with similarly configured servers, with the latest result, the ProLiant BL20p G2 server

achieved the following superior performance for number of SAP SD Benchmark users:

•

77.3% versus the IBM eServer BladeCenter HS20 – approaching twice the performance advantage

•

40.6% versus the Dell PowerEdge 2650

•

29.5% versus the Fujitsu Siemens BX600

•

27.5% versus the Sun Fire E4900

and

•

Showed a 25% performance improvement over the previous generation ProLiant BL20p G2

processor configuration.

Explanation of SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark

The SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark consists of the following transactions:

•

Create an order with five line items (transaction VA01)

•

Create a delivery for this order (VL01)

•

Display the customer order (VA03)

•

Change the delivery (VL02) and post goods issue

•

List 40 orders for one sold-to party (VA05)

•

Create an invoice (VF01)

HP ProLiant BL20p G2

The BL20p G2 is a dual processor server blade designed for performance front-end and mid-tier

computing with enterprise availability. This server blade features up to two Intel Xeon DP 3.2-GHz

processors, PC2100 ECC SDRAM (8 GB max memory), Integrated Smart Array 5i Plus (with BBWC),

and two hot-plug SCSI drives. The ProLiant BL20p G2 delivers optional fibre-channel support for SAN

implementations and clustering capabilities. Fibre-Channel capability is achieved using a Dual Port

Fibre Channel Mezzanine Card (2-Gb) specifically designed for the ProLiant BL20p G2. The ProLiant

BL20p G2 is optimized for HP StorageWorks and can also attach to 3

rd

party SANs. Using the

ProLiant BL20p G2 in conjunction with other BL servers, expenses can be reduced by managing

remotely from anywhere in the world with Integrated Lights Out (iLO).
