This growth rate compares with yearly rises of 2.2 % and 7.3 % recorded in 1977 and 1976 respectively. An analysis of twelve monthly growth trends of the unadjusted index reveals that in the first six months of 1978 the rate of expansion of the Community's industrial production fell sharply whereas in the second part of the year the rate of growth of the EUR-9 index accelerated steadily. By the end of 1978 the improved trends in industrial production in the EEC seemed to be well established, so that further expansion can be expected in the early months of 1979.
