The seasonally-adjusted index was 117.9, a rise of almost 2 % as compared with December 1977. This increase in production occurred in different degrees in all the Community countries, except in The Netherlands. Production did not, however, increase in the same type of branch in the various countries. Production in the capital goods industries, for example, increased by 3 % in January for the Community as a whole, largely because of the rise in German (+ 5 %) and Italian (+ 12 %) production. Output of intermediate products rose slightly for the Community, the major increases being in France (+ 3 %) and the United Kingdom (+ 2 %). Production of consumer goods remained stable at Community level, an increase of 4 % in Italy being compensated for by decreases of 6 % in The Netherlands and 3 % in Belgium.
