Description

RAPID REPORTS eurostat Energy and industry 1993 D 7 ISSN 1016-0191 Statistical aspects of the natural gas economy in 1992 The first provisional data for 1992 show that gross inland consumption of natural gas in EUR 12 was 10707 Petajoules, slightly less (- 0.4 %) than in 1991 when it was 10747 Petajoules. Structure of supply Community production rose by about 24 Petajoules (+ 0,5 %). As for the two main producers, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, production there fell by about 1 %. Extra-Community imports showed a slight fall (- 0,4 %) while intra-Community imports increased by about 10 %. Looking at imports country by country, those from Algeria rose by 11 % and those from the former Soviet Union fell by 3,6 %. The former Soviet Union is the Community's biggest supplier of natural gas with a 43,6 % share of the total. Consumption trends Running against the trend of the last few years, the consumption of natural gas did not rise in 1992. This is due to quite mild weather during the period as well the economic recession in the final months of 1992. However the situation varies between Member States : there was a slight fall for the United Kingdom (-2,7%), the Netherlands (-1,6%), (Italy -1,7%) and Germany (-0,9%) whereas there was a marked increase for France (+5,5%). This rise is due to the increasing use of gas in the residential, commercial and public sectors. Manuscript completed on = 08.03.
