Cahiers de linguistique - Asie orientale - Année 1994 - Volume 23 - Numéro 1 - Pages 129-139The problem of the velar fricatives in the Thai branch (southwestern tai) must be considered apart from the Yay branch (northern tai). The list of words beginning with these units is somewhat different in the two branches. This seems to be due to the fact that velar fricatives do not belong to a common layer but were created separately in the two branches. The development of velar fricatives in the various languages of the Thai branch is conditioned by two converging shifts, the general devoicing of voiced obstruents and the occasional merging of the velar fricatives with velar plosives. The result depends on the chronology of these two shifts. 11 pages Source : Persée ; Ministère de la jeunesse, de l’éducation nationale et de la recherche, Direction de l’enseignement supérieur, Sous-direction des bibliothèques et de la documentation.
