Understanding Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property
You ŵay haǀe heard the terŵ ͞technology transfer͟, ďut you ŵay Ŷotreally be too familiar with what exactly this term means. This has become a requirement for facilities that get federal funding for researĐh aŶd it largely is aĐĐoŵplished ďy liĐeŶsiŶg oŶe’s intellectual property to different companies that actually have the necessary resources and strive to develop these ideas. There is a whole process around this concept that is very important to understand when you find yourself in the situation where a technology transfer happens. Technology transfer also goes by the name of͞traŶsfer of teĐhŶology͟.
A lot of ĐoŵpaŶies, goǀerŶŵeŶtal orgaŶizatioŶs haǀe aŶ ͞OffiĐe ofTechnology Transfer͟(also known as TTO) that is dedicated for the sole purpose of identifying potentially valuable research that could entice commercial interest. Once it does that, it will figure out different strategies on how to exploit these things. There are different factors that come into consideration for what intellectual properties have the commercial interest that makes it valuable. When places like universities involve themselves in the process of technology transfers, the will receive payments for the licenses on their intellectual properties. The money earned in this scenario would be distributed throughout the university but it will specifically include compensation for those involved with the intellectual property.
There is a process that goes on when there is atechnology transferthat is going to take place. One process involves setting up licensing agreements, which is a common process whenever someone is interested in purchasing intellectual property. Another process is setting up something like a joint venture or partnership. This will combine the two parties that will share all of the benefits and the risks when there is any new innovation. One process that is very common in the United States is raising venture capital in order to fund the development process.
The TTOs that work for these organizations have a staff that is varied in their specialized disciplines. The staff typically includes lawyers, economists, marketers, engineers, scientists, and marketers. This team works well together thanks to their different sets of skills and faces the complexity of this entire process oftechnology transfer. This is a very complicated process that does require a team of experts. Still, there has been a high level of increase of transfer technologies since the 1980s.
There are different approaches to transfer technologies that will depend on the preference of the parties that are involved. The Office of Technology Transfers is very particular about the intellectual properties that they choose to work with. If they cannot see any value or potential in an intellectual property, they will quickly move onto the next idea. Once atechnology transferoccurs, it is the new oǁŶer of this iŶtelleĐtual property’s respoŶsiďility to take Đare of all ŶeĐessary filiŶgs aŶd registratioŶs that are required. They are also the ones that are focused on marketing the innovations as well as dealing with any other legality that are necessary during this process. This is why a team of multidisciplinary experts is necessary for this process.
