COURSE DESCRIPTIONS The first two courses, Country Analysis and International Development: Critical Perspective on Theory and Practice, are mandatory. MSID Senegal: General Syllabus & Schedule


COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The first two courses, Country Analysis and International Development: Critical Perspective on Theory and Practice, are
mandatory. To satisfactorily complete their academic activities in the MSID program, students are required to attend and
participate in classes and also to complete and submit all assignments and activities prescribed by instructors on time.

Students are required to enroll for only one track. They may audit others as they please. They should, however, specify
their status (“enrolled” or “auditing”) to the instructors involved and to the Academic Program Director. The following
tracks are offered:
• Education and Literacy
• Environmental Studies, Ecology and Sustainable Agriculture
• Public Health and Social Services
• Cultural Studies and Development
• Microbusiness and Alternative Economics

Details on your language course (Wolof) will be given by M. Sidy Guèye. This course is mandatory. French (15 hours) and
Research Methodology (15 hours) are mandatory complementary courses. French is part of the Country Analysis course.

The course entitled Community Internship in the Global South is actually your internship. It will be graded based on your
performance while on site, the report from your supervisor and your internship oral presentation and written report at the
final integrating seminar at the end of the program.

FACULTY
Pr Ousmane Sène
Prof. Sène is the Director of the MSID-Senegal program. He chaired the Department of English at the University Cheikh
Anta Diop, Dakar for 10 years. He received his Ph.D in literature from Ecole Normale Supérieure of St. Cloud and the
University Paris III-Sorbonne. He has taught and done research on Francophone and Anglophone literature at several
North American and European universities. He has been a visiting professor at several institutions including Michigan
State, Oxford, Wofford, Converse, Florida-Gainseville, Loyola-Marymount, Beloit and Minnesota. Dr. Sène is especially
interested in the portrayal of African social, cultural and development issues through literature. He is currently the
Director of the West African Research Center. He has been involved with MSID since 1995.

Mr. Mouhamadou Lamine Kane
Mr. Kane is a freelance consultant and educational sociologist. He received a post-graduate degree in Adult Education and
Community Development from Manchester University. He did research on African social anthropology and history at the
language department of Université Libre in Brussels, Belgium. From 1993 to 1995, he was the Program Officer of
UNICEF’s Education Projects in Dakar, which led him to work with the formal, informal and remedial education sectors
in Senegal, focusing on children’s education.

He has experience working with the Education Ministry, UNICEF, UNESCO and the USAID and has visited many
African countries. He recently wrote a paper on poverty reduction through education for the international conference in
South Africa on “Education and Sustainable Development.” Mr. Kane is a founding member of Senegalese National
Adult Education (ANAFA). He is involved with various NGOs in the country and is an active member of civil society
organizations.

Mr. Fulgence Séne
Fulgence knows the MSID program very well as a former program assistant and coordinator. He graduated from
University Cheikh Anta Diop and earned a degree at the University of Minnesota in the field of education. He is now a
language (English and French) specialist.


Dr Ousmane Aly Pame
Dr O. Aly Pame is an Associate Professor at the Department of English at Cheikh Anta Diop University where he has
been teaching translation, English civilization and literature for the past four years. He taught French language and
Senegalese literature at the Department of French at Exeter University (United Kingdom). Dr Pame has also taught
business English at the Suffolk University Dakar Campus and at CESAG, a West African sub-regional management
school. He has been actively involved in English language teacher’s training seminars sponsored by the Senegalese
Ministry of Education and the British Council.

Mr. Sidy Guèye
Monsieur Sidy Guèye est un formateur en langue et culture. Après une formation en en Competency Based Training, M.
Guèye a formé des formateurs et des participants du corps de la Paix et des volontaires de la JICA.

Mr. Waly FAYE
Monsieur Faye est le Coordonnateur de MSID Senegal. Il est titulaire d’un Diplôme d’Etudes Supérieures Spécialisées
(DESS) en Management des Projets. Monsieur Faye est intéressé par les questions de développement. Il a également une
expérience significative du développement au niveau local et communautaire et de la gestion des organisations.

Mme Ndèye Fatou GUEYE
Mme Ndeye Fatou GUEYE est titulaire d’un Master en Interrelation Population – Développement – Santé. Après son
diplôme d’Assistant social, elle a assuré les services sociaux de plusieurs hôpitaux au Sénégal.
Actuellement est responsable du Service Social et du Service de prise en charge des travailleuses du sexe et des Personnes
Vivant avec le virus de l’immunodéficience humaine (PvVIH) au District Sanitaire de Mbao.

M. Alioune Sow
M. Sow est titulaire d’un MBA en Finance de l’Université de New Haven (Connecticut-USA). Directeur Délégué à
l’Economie et aux Finances de FDEA (Femme Développement Entreprise en Afrique), une institution de microfinance
de 2008 à 2009 et Consultant Financier spécialiste en développement au Cabinet SEN Ingénierie Consult (SIC), M.
Alioune Sow a conduit plusieurs missions d’évaluation et de formation dans les institutions de microfinance.

Oumar Diene, PhD
In 2010 Oumar Diene completed his thesis in urban and environmental studies in the Department of Geography at the
University Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) in Dakar. His thesis was on changes in the use of urban space with modernization.
He is also the Secretary General of the Senegal Ecovillage Network, GEN Senegal. He has grown up with the Yoff village
association, APECSY, engaging in community development work since an early age, and has been leading the service
learning fieldwork portion of the Living Routes courses since they began in Senegal in 2004.

GRADING
CRITERIA FOR GRADING AND GRADING STANDARDS

A 95+
Achievement that is outstanding relative to the level necessary to meet
course requirements.
A- 90-94
Achievement that is significantly above the level necessary to meet course B+ 86-89
requirements.
B 83-85
B- 80-82
C+ 76-79 Achievement that meets the course requirements in every respect.
C 73-75
C- 70-72 Achievement that is worthy of credit even though it fails to meet fully the

D+ 66-69 course requirements.
D 60-65
F <60
Represents failure (or no credit) and signifies that the work was either (1)
completed but at a level of achievement that is not worthy of credit or (2)
was not completed and there was no agreement between the instructor
and the student that the student would be awarded an I.
