PROGRAM2007 - 2010  “Improving the prescription of psychotropic drugs  in the French elderly”    Depressi n o     Appraisal step 2008      WHAT WE KNOW  Depressionis common in the elderly and is strongly linked to the presence of somatic conditions, geographical or social environment and life events (bereavement, institution confinement).  This disease is insufficiently diagnosed particularly among the elderly. The presence of signs of anxiety often leads to prescription of benzodiazepines, drugs that are not effective in treating depression.   A "depressive feeling" is not a depression! Feeling sad, to be "depressed" does not necessarily mean that we suffer from depression. These are facts of life. To speak therefore of depression and this illness, these disturbances in mood must be multiple and well characterized.   Source: "Depression, know more to succeed" national institute for prevention and education for health (INPES), 2007
