                 P ROGRAM 2007   –   2010   “Improving the prescription of psychotropic drugs   in the French elderly”       Behavioral disorders       Appraisal step 2008             W HAT IS KNOWN     Behavioral disorders frequently occur in the elderly. It is necessary to distinguish the behavioral disorders known as "productive" (shouts, agitation, aggressiveness, wandering), frequently observed in Alzheimer's and related diseases, the conduct of troubles occurring during an episode of acute confusion, observed in one third of elderly emergency hospitalized. The care is quite different, but not well established and little-known by professionals. In any event, the frequent recourse observed in the use of neuroleptic medication or other sedatives is not appropriate especially in the long term. Only psychoses and delusional syndromes should be treatedby neuroleptics in the long term.          The neuroleptics in the long term are not indicated in the behavioral disorders .
