The Basics The Vatican City is officially known as the Vatican City State . It is the world’s smallest country by both its size and population (with country being defined as ‘an internationally recognized independent state’). The Vatican is a walled enclave entirely surrounded by the city of Rome. It is ruled by the Pope, who is the head of the Catholic Church. The Pope is also known as the Bishop of Rome . All of the senior members of the Vatican’s government are Catholic clergymen who originate from a range of countries across the world. Most of these officials live and work in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace. Whereas one measures most countries’ area is square miles, the Vatican is usually quoted in acres: 110 to be precise. That’s just 0.171 square miles! The official estimate of the Vatican’s population in 2014 was just 842 people; this is the number of those who are classed as official full-time residents of the country (although they may work abroad for a significant portion of the year). The Vatican City’s official spoken language is Italian. The Holy See is a different entity to the Vatican City. Whereas the Vatican is essentially the small area of land situated in Rome, the Holy See refers to the huge worldwide organizational structure of the Catholic Church, of which the Pope is also the head. When it comes to ecclesiastical decisions (those to do with religion and the church) it is the Holy See that is important, whereas issuing passports, printing stamps and the like is the business of the Vatican.
