A Ghostly Whisper
M.A. Church
Neil stretched, the sheets caressing his naked flesh. The weekend had arrived, and the game plan was to do nothing more than lie around and relax. He glanced over the huddled form, lying so close, and contentment flooded him. Four months ago he’d made a breakthrough with Zane at their apartment’s swimming pool. His gentle persuasion had finally gotten through Zane’s reluctance to date. After being outed as the gay male author Sivad - which was Zane’s last name, Davis, spelled backwards - some mainstream publishers had abandoned him because he wrote gay porn, as they called it. Two months after their first non-date date - Zane’s words - Neil moved in with Zane.
Deciding to surprise Zane with breakfast, Neil got up and slipped out of the room. He barely had the bacon frying when he heard sounds of Zane stirring. A little while later the shower cut off, but Zane still hadn’t come out of the bedroom.
“Hey! Breakfast’s ready.”
Zane walked in the kitchen, toweling his hair dry, wearing a pair of old Levi’s. “Guess what?”
Neil eyed Zane’s bare feet, bare chest, and unsnapped jeans. Damn, Zane was glorious. “What?”
Zane threw the towel in the laundry room. “An author friend called right after I got out of the shower. His publisher, who I also publish with, booked a retreat at this place called BJ Hotel for Halloween weekend. He made his reservation, but he can’t go. So he offered me his place. You interested?”
“Well, love the name, that’s for damn sure. It sounds cool. When and where?” Neil placed the plates on the table and sat.
Zane joined Neil at the table. “It’s a two night, three day package for next weekend. The hotel’s located in a small town named Deliverance, Mississippi. According to the brochures, it’s surrounded by woods - very nice-looking cabins and private. Think you can get off that Friday?”
“Cabins?”
“Yeah.”
“Cabins in the woods on Halloween weekend.”
“Yes, Neil.”
“Yeah, that’s certainly not asking for trouble. They have electricity, right?”
“What a thing to ask.” Zane hoped they had electricity.
“Damn, the things I do for you. Yeah, taking a vacation day shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Good! I can’t wait.”
***
Monday Neil asked for the following Friday off. The work week flew and Friday rolled around. They managed to get a fairly early start, even thought Neil had ambushed Zane in the shower. Neil had started the drive in a good mood, but hours later that was fading fast.
“Jesus, there’s nothing out here but a whole lot of nothing. You sure that GPS is right?”
“According to this we should be - ah, there we go.” Chip pointed at a sign. “That’s it - the BJ Hotel. I’m betting that big building’s where we check in.”
“Oh, thank you Lord, there’s lights. If they have lights, they should have in-door plumbing too.”
Zane laughed. “You are such a city boy.”
“Oh, shut up.” Neil parked the truck in front of the main building. “Okay, it’s not a bad-looking place. Let’s get checked in.”
Zane followed Neil inside. In the main lodge, there was a dining room, and an indoor swimming pool, as well as something called the Holy Room. Zane checked in with the desk clerk while Neil looked around.
“Ah, there you are,” the desk clerk said as he pecked on the computer. “Okay, got you registered and everything. You’re in cabin 5D. Here’s a map of the grounds, your keycard, and directions to the cabin.”
“Thanks.” Zane took the key card from the desk clerk as Neil walked back to the front desk.
As they turned to leave, Zane caught sight of a strange-looking man standing at a desk in a back office. The plaque on the door said Brussels Jaeger-Owner. He was very tall, at least six and a half feet, with long, greasy grey hair, and one milky dead eye. There was an ugly mole beneath his left eye. He wore a long black minister’s coat, black pants, and a black string tie. Zane shuddered. The man was damn creepy and exuded menace in waves.
Neil waited until they were back in the truck and Zane had shut his door. “Did you see that guy there in the back? Guess that’s the owner of the place.”
“Yeah. Hate to be mean, but he gave me the willies.” Zane looked at the woods surrounding them as they followed the map. In the twilight the cabins looked warm and inviting. “There we are - 5D.
“Nice,” Neil said. The cabin was pained a light tan color, had a fireplace running up the side, and a tin roof painted teal. Large sliding doors looked out over a fenced deck.
“Cool. The cabin might have a loft. Check out that big window upstairs.”
“If I’m not mistaken, that’s a hot tub on the deck too.” Neil parked and together they unloaded their luggage. “Can’t wait to get you in that.”
“You’re such a horn dog.” Zane snorted as he walked to their cabin. “Huh, that’s odd.”
“What?”
“Oh, nothing. Must have been the fading light. I thought I saw someone in the upstairs window.” Zane shrugged. “Come on. Let’s get the stuff out of the ice chest and into the fridge. I’m too tired to eat out tonight.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
They were nearly unpacked when Neil noticed his keys were missing. “Zane, you seen my keys?”
“Check the kitchen table,” Zane yelled from outside. “Saw’em there.”
“They’re not there now. Dammit.” Neil ran a hand through his hair. “Where the hell did they get off to?”
“Here they are.” Zane came inside holding the keys like a dead animal. “They were by the hot tub.”
Neil shook his head. “There’s no way, Zane. I know for a fact I put them on the kitchen table. You even saw them there.”
“I did, yes. Maybe you picked them back up on one of your many trips outside and just forgot.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Well, they didn’t walk out there on their own.”
“Guess not, but it sure beats the hell out of me how they got out there.” Neil threw the keys on the little kitchen table, shaking his head. “Anyway, whatcha want for dinner?”
“Something fast and easy.... And I mean dinner, not me.” Zane winked. “And let’s see if we can find the thermostat. It’s cold in here.”
After a quick dinner, Neil lured Zane into the hot tub.
“Well, that was a mistake,” Neil sighed, not long after. Between the late nights and the hot water, Zane couldn’t keep his eyes open. After Zane’s head fell against his shoulder for the third time, Neil lifted him out of the hot tub. “How about a quick nap, babe?”
“Sorry.” Zane yawned as he was carried upstairs to the bedroom. “God, I’m tired - too many late nights trying to meet deadlines. Just don’t let me sleep long, okay? I’ll be up all night otherwise.”
“Deal.” Neil dried Zane off and turned the covers back. “In you go.”
“Thanks, babe.”
“No problem.” Curled up in bed, Neil looked down at Zane. His man was asleep five minutes after his head hit the pillow.
***
Neil glanced at the clock - a two hour nap should be enough to revive Zane. Eyeing the still form next to him, a mischievous grin crossed Neil’s face. He was up - in more ways than one - so why should he be the only one up? Zane was on his side, facing away from him. He gently folded the comforter back, and waited. When nothing happened, he tugged the sheet down, uncovering that sexy ass which drove him nuts.
“Oh, that’s subtle.” Zane grumbled, but he didn’t turn over, or pull the sheet up.
“Thought you were asleep.” Neil ran his finger down Zane’s back, enjoying the trail of chill bumps that followed.
“A cold draft woke me.” Zane’s body shuddered, both from cold and pleasure. “Imagine that.”
Neil snickered. “Well, the view is damn fine, let me tell you.”
“And let me tell you, this bedroom is damn cold.” Zane shivered again. “Jeez, you could hang meat in here.”
“Meat, huh?” Neil spooned Zane, nestling his hard-on against Zane’s ass. “It’s not that cold. Besides, I like cuddling with you.”
“I’m all for it, but damn.” Zane reached down, grabbing the sheet and comforter. He pulled them up to his chin - covering everything.
“Aw, there went my view.”
“Would you stop?” Zane snorted softly at the pouting noises behind him. A tremor ran through his body when Neil rubbed his cock against his ass.
“Oh, so you want me to stop? Stop this?” Neil thrust against Zane, dragging a moan from his lover. “Or did you mean stop pouting?”
“You can pout to your heart’s content, just keep doing what you’re doing!” Zane wiggled his ass.
“Raise your arm over your head.” Neil whispered in Zane’s ear, his warm breath sending more chills down Zane’s back. “Need some room to work, and that arm’s in my way.”
Zane, lying on his side, had one arm tucked under the pillow. He raised his other arm, letting it rest against his face. Now his body was open to Neil.
“Perfect.” Neil lifted the silky, blond strands of hair out of the way and nuzzled Zane’s neck, his dick cozying up against Zane’s crack.
“Ohhh...” Zane’s breath hit
