Pittsburgh Pirates - The Philadelphia Athletics forgot to place 2 play on their reserve list. Pittsburgh claimed them. A Philadelphia sportswriter claimed that Pittsburgh “pirated away” the 2 players.
San Diego Padres - named after the cities Pacific Coast League team.
San Francisco Giants - legend has it that N.Y. Gothams manager Jim Mutrie referred to his team as “giants” of a win over Philadelphia
St. Louis Cardinals - In 1899 Willie McHale associated with a St. paper heard a woman describe the team’s red stockings as a “lovely shade of cardinal.”
Washington Nationals - the original team was often times referred to as the Nationals.

The Washington D.C. Baseball Teams
The original Washington Senators, who were often referred to as the Nationals, played in the National League from 1892 to 1900.
The 2 nd Washington Senators was a charter member of the American League in 1901. In 1961 it moved to Minnesota and is known as the Minnesota Twins (An American League Team)
The 3 rd Washington Sena
