Pittsburgh Pirates - The Philadelphia Athletics forgot to place 2 play on their reserve list. Pittsburgh claimed them. A Philadelphia sportswriter claimed that Pittsburgh “pirated away” the 2 players.
San Diego Padres - named after the cities Pacific Coast League team.
San Francisco Giants - legend has it that N.Y. Gothams manager Jim Mutrie referred to his team as “giants” of a win over Philadelphia
St. Louis Cardinals - In 1899 Willie McHale associated with a St. paper heard a woman describe the team’s red stockings as a “lovely shade of cardinal.”
Washington Nationals - the original team was often times referred to as the Nationals.
