Dining Out

Virtually every part of Hamburg has good dining options, ranging from humble to fine. Unsurprisingly, seafood is a favourite in this port city, with everything from traditional regional specialities to sushi on offer. You’ll also find a truly global variety of foods reflecting this city’s international links and traditions, but don’t neglect the widely available local specialities.

Local Specialities
On paper, Germany’s (and Hamburg’s) best-known specialities appear deceptively simple: wurst , brot , kartoffeln and sauerkraut (sausage, bread, potatoes and pickled cabbage).

Labskaus
If there’s one Hamburg or northern German dish that Hamburgers love more than any other, it’s Labskaus . The constituent ingredients are potato, cured beef, herrings and beetroot (the latter gives it the rather lurid colour that distinguishes true Labskaus ) and although it’s usually called a stew, ‘mash’ would be more accurate. It’s usually served topped with an egg.

Fischbrötchen
Finding the perfect Fischbrötchen (fish roll or fish sandwich; pictured) is something of a Hamburg obsession, at once lunchtime snack or late-night comfort food for those on the way home from a big night out. It’s a very simple dish, with a piece of pickled herring (sometimes salted, sometimes sweet) served in a small roll, often with a token piece of lettuce.

Bar Open

Hamburg’s nightlife is legendary, and rightly so. Elite cocktail bars, nonstop nightclubs and world-class DJs are all part of a mix that rocks and rolls with energy and innovation. Bars & Pubs
The mainstay of Hamburg’s drinking culture, this catch-all category includes the rough-and-tumble neighbourhood pubs of St Pauli and the quietly sophisticated bars of Altona. Most open around 5pm during the week, earlier on weekends, and stay open until the last customer staggers out the door.
When it comes to city beaches, you have to salute Hamburgers for their can-do spirit. Undeterred by their renowned Schmuddelwetter (drizzly weather), they’ve built little sandy enclaves on the banks of the Elbe, where they can enjoy a beer on the sand.

Brewery Bars
Old-style beer cellars or other traditional drinking houses where the beer used to be (and sometimes still is) brewed on the premises. Craft beers are pushing their way into this scene.

Nightclubs
Don’t even think of visiting a Hamburg nightclub before midnight. Some don’t even get going until after 2am. Some Hamburg nightclubs have cover charges, and those that don’t play catch-up with expensive drinks.

Hamburg’s shopping may not rival its nightlife in profile, but there are numerous interesting finds – from mainstream to offbeat – as you explore the city. As a general rule, shopping possibilities reflect the neighbourhoods they inhabit – Neustadt and Altstadt are refined and upmarket, while St Pauli, Altona and St Georg have more boutiques and artsy corner shops.
