Vorwort

Die Tempoangabe „Unregelmäßig und sehr langsam (MM 26)“ ist wörtlich zu verstehen. Der Dirigent sollte Viertel schlagen, keinesfalls Achtel. Er gibt lediglich den zeitlichen Rahmen vor; jeder Musiker teilt die Zeit selbständig ein, und zwar unabhängig von den anderen. Die Rhythmen müssen immer etwas „wackeln“; der vorgeschriebene Rhythmus sollte also nicht ganz genau eingehalten werden. Die unübersichtlich wirkende Notierung mit kurzen Notenwerten und vielen Balken soll diese Ungenauigkeit fördern. Trotzdem ist darauf zu achten, dass die gespielten Noten nicht allzu sehr von den Schlägen des Dirigenten abweichen. Das bedeutet auch, dass gleichzeitig notierte Töne (z.B. mehrfach besetzte Stimmen, gleichzeitige Einsätze) nicht gleichzeitig erklingen müssen. Ausnahmen sind in der Partitur und in den Stimmen ausdrücklich angegeben (Anweisung „Instrument1/2 koordiniert“), vgl. dazu die Erläuterungen auf Seite 4; in diesen Fällen müssen die betreffenden Musiker genau gleichzeitig spielen, und zwar unabhängig von den anderen. In denjenigen Abschnitten des Stückes, bei denen das ausdrücklich vorgeschrieben ist, müssen jedoch alle genau im Takt spielen.

Preface

The tempo indication „Irregular and very slow (MM 26)“ must be taken literally. The conductor should beat the quarter notes, not the eighth notes. He gives only the frame of time; each musician divides the time independently from the others. Always the rhythms must „wobble“ a little bit; this means that it is not necessary that the rhythms prescribed will be played quite exactly. The confusing short notes with the lot of cross-bars emphasize this irregularity. Nevertheless, the notes played should not differ too much from the beat of the conductor. As a consequence, it is not necessary that simultaneous notes (e.g. parts which are played by more than one musician, or simultaneous attacks) will be played at exactly the same time. Exceptions are explicitly prescribed within the score and within the parts (the prescription „Instrument1/2 coordinated“), see the explanations on page 4; in these cases the musicians involved have to play exactly together, independently of the others. But within those parts of the piece where it is prescribed explicitly, all the musicians must play exactly in time.
