Description

great promenade runs Durban's ‘Golden Mile’ is a jogger's paradise. Enjoy endless sea views to one side and the impressive Moses Mabhida Stadium on the other side, as you bask in Durbs’ positively balmy weather. The Route The Golden Mile stretches between the harbour and the Umgeni mouth. The Durban Municipality completed the final phase of walkways to the Blue Lagoon in 2013, which means joggers now have an uninterrupted 7 KM of red brick paving from uShaka Beach to the Blue Lagoon, Kingfisher Canoe Clubs. Sounds like heaven! Terrain No obvious undulation with the exception of one or two gradual slopes near South Beach. Other than that, it's as flat as a pancake. As mentioned above, brick paveway runs all the way, so no surprises underfoot there. Proximity to traffic The municipality really pulled out all the stops to ensure that joggers, cyclists and strollers have the freedom of the promenade, well away from the noises and bustle of any traffic. It does get a little congested at Laguna Pools, though, where the promenade narrows a bit, so be on the look out for cars there. Best Time of the Day to Run In winter, any hour of the day is glorious on the promenade. Summers in Durbs get a bit sticky, so it's advisable to hit the beach in the early morning before the infamous humidity kicks in. Refreshments and Ablutions Plenty of facilities, although it does thin out a bit towards Blue Lagoon.

Summers in Durbs get a bit sticky, so it's advisable to hit the beach in the early morning before the infamous humidity kicks in. Refreshments and Ablutions Plenty of facilities, although it does thin out a bit towards Blue Lagoon. Parking and Security Plenty of parking bays and car guards along the ‘Mile’. Most of the establishments will gladly hold your keys in exchange for a small patronage. Durban promenade has a police station and plenty of police presence. All in all, it deserves its reputation as a worldrenowned, safe and family friendly destination. PORT ELIZABETH Nelson Mandela Bay Promenade It may be called The Windy City but, in truth, Port Elizabeth enjoys one of the best climates of any coastal city in the world. And with an ocean warm enough to dip in after your run, there's simply no excuse not to hit the Nelson Mandela Bay promenade. The Route A shortish, pleasant route of around 4 KM takes you from Kings Beach to just passed Pollock Beach near Rincon surf spot. Terrain
Like all beachfront promenades, you can expect a nice flat contour for most of the route, on a smooth sidewalk surface. Proximity to Traffic Most of the promenade is set away from the road, which makes it safe and familyfriendly. There is a short section through the Summerstrand parking lot where joggers should keep their eyes peeled for moving cars. Best Time of the Day to Run PE enjoys a mild, moderate climate with more sunshine and fewer rainy days than any of South Africa's other major seaside cities. In short, the best time to get down to the promenade is now! Refreshments and Ablutions There are a number of places to stop and get water along the route, with showers and toilets available, right to the end of Pollack Beach and The Pipe surfing spot. Parking and Security Plenty of safe parking all the way along the beachfront, but it's recommended that you start at King's Beach car park where there are ample bays and car guards on duty. CAPE TOWN Sea Point Promenade Beautiful scenery, sunsets and people. What's there not to love about Cape Town's Sea Point Promenade? The Route The classic Sea Point route takes you from the Mouille Point Lighthouse to the Sea Point Swimming Pool; and at a little over 3 KM it's great for a brisk or casual run. But for those joggers that require a little more mileage in their training, the extended route carries on around Clifton and ends down on Camps Bay beach. A total of 8.5 breathtakingly scenic kilometres. Terrain The promenade section from the lighthouse to the Sea Point Swimming Pool comprises flat paving. Things get a little more complicated when negotiating the pavement around Clifton and down to Camps Bay. Proximity to Traffic As mentioned above, the Sea Point promenade section is set away from the road, right against the rocks, making it a safe and familyfriendly destination. The journey to Camps Bay however requires you to hit the pavement, and that means being on the lookout for hidden driveways, turning cars, pedestrians and construction sites. Best Time of the Day to Run Make the most of the long summer days by hitting the promenade after 5pm and enjoying the sunsets. Cape Town's wet winters are infamous and the promenade is sometimes flooded by
rough seas, but don't let a few stormy days put you off. Refreshments and Ablutions Lots of facilities in Sea Point, although it does thin out a bit towards Clifton. Parking and Security Parking is always a little scarce in Cape Town. However there is good, safe parking in Mouille Point, so we recommended you start there.
