ARISTOTLE
384-322 BC

Aristotle was a Greek philosopher and polymath, born in Stagira, Greece, and today considered one of the most important figures in Western philosophy. His writings cover a wide range of subjects from physics, biology and zoology to poetry, music, logic, politics, government and ethics.

Aristotle studied at Plato’s Academy for nearly twenty years. When he joined (aged seventeen), the Academy was considered one of Greece’s top learning institutions. On Plato’s death in 347 BC, Aristotle may well have thought that he would take over Plato’s role as director of the Academy. However, this was not to be. Instead, he travelled in Asia Minor for a few years, after which he began to tutor Philip II of Macedon’s son, Alexander (later, Alexander the Great). In 335 BC, Aristotle founded his own school, the Lyceum (after the god Apollo Lykeios), in Athens, where he studied, taught and wrote. His pupils covered a variety of subjects ranging from philosophy and politics to science and maths.

On the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC, owing to the anti-Macedonian tensions in Athens, and possibly fearing the same fate as that of his friend Socrates, Aristotle fled to the island of Euboea, where he remained until his death the following year.
