PLATO
429-347 BC
Plato is considered one of the greatest philosophers of all time. He was a Greek polymath: a philosopher, a mathematician, a writer and founder (at the age of 30) of the Academy in Athens – an institution of higher learning where he taught Aristotle, amongst others.
Born into a wealthy family, Plato seemed destined for a political career until he heard Socrates speak and he became a student and friend of his.
After Socrates’ death, Plato turned to writing, mathematics (studying with the Pythagoreans in Italy), geometry, astrology and religion. Plato’s most famous work is The Republic (380 BC), outlining what in his view was the ideal government. Other works include Symposium (c.385-380 BC), examining love, and his dialogues on the trial and death of Socrates, notably Apology (the Greek ‘apologia’ translated here as ‘defence’ or ‘explanation’ rather than ‘apology’), Plato’s account of Socrates’ speech that the latter gave as he defended himself in 399 BC, on charges of being a Physicalist and a Sophist, the corruption of youth, and impiety.
The circumstances surrounding Plato’s demise have been much debated, but it is clear that he lived into his eighties and died in Athens. His legacy lives on.
